Mike Shanahan Addresses The Santana Moss Issue

Posted by Matt Terl on May 26, 2010 – 1:43 pm

There was some hope that Santana Moss would address the media today to discuss his name being linked to Canadian doctor Anthony Galea, who has been charged with smuggling human growth hormone into the United States. Moss elected not to field any non-football questions, but Moss’s teammates said that he had spoken to them about the situation, and Moss himself acknowledged that he had discussed it with his head coach.

And the head coach turned out to be more than willing to speak up on his behalf.
Mike Shanahan’s press conference opened with a barrage of Moss questions, and the coach answered them plainly, in a tone that made it fairly clear the he’s supporting his player.

“I sat down and talked to Santana earlier today and went through a bunch of situations that have happened to him,” Shanahan said, “and I feel really good about where he’s at. I feel real good that he’ll be … I don’t know if vindicated’s the word, but I think when people find out all the facts, he’ll be okay.”

Shanahan added that while he hadn’t spoken to the league about Moss, he also doesn’t anticipate having to worry about the player being suspended. He could not, however, explain exactly why he felt that way.

“I can’t go into detail,” he said. “There’s a lot of investigation that goes on, I think you know that as well as I do. There’s a number of things that’ll occur probably in the next couple weeks, but as I said I feel very good about the situation at hand.”

Shanahan also addressed the omnipresent Brian Westbrook question, saying that the two sides were “still talking. He hasn’t made a decision yet. I’m kinda talking to his brother a little bit, tryin’ to get in good with him — or a little better — and I’m not sure it’s helped a whole lot, but I’ll keep on trying.”

(Let me interject that I absolutely love the mental image of Shanahan trying to be subtle about bringing up Brian in conversations with cornerback Byron Westbrook. “Hey, nice play out there today. Soooooooooooooo … what’s your brother up to?”)

And Shanahan also acknowledged that three players — LaRon Landry, Andre Carter, and punter Josh Bidwell — were absent today, but made it clear that this was not an earthshaking crisis in the world of Redskins OTAs. “Every once in a while there’s gonna be a situation where a guy’s excused or he’s got a problem,” Shanahan said, “and I won’t get into all the scenarios, but that’s typical of OTA days and hopefully we won’t have too many of those.”

Shanahan was also asked if he felt frustration about having to answer questions about the still-absent Albert Haynesworth. “I don’t answer questions about guys that aren’t here,” Shanahan said for roughly the 5,224th time. “I’m talking about the people that are here, and I’ve been doing that pretty consistently over the last month or so.”
