When the Washington Wizards won the NBA’s Draft Lottery last night, there was immediate cheering and rejoicing that the team would select University of Kentucky point guard John Wall with the first overall pick. Redskins second-year defensive end Jeremy Jarmon, a Kentucky grad, was so immediate that he tweeted “Wall to the Wiz!!!” a solid minute ahead of the pick actually being announced.
“Yeah,” he told me today, laughing. “I had a connect in the room prior to ‘em comin’ back from commercial break.”
Jarmon was on his way to D.C. when Wall was arriving for his stellar freshman campaign in Lexington, so the two don’t know each other well, but that’s not stopping him from getting enthused about the possibility of a fellow Kentucky guy in town.
“It’s exciting,” Jarmon said. “I think that’s all part of the UK tradition. We take pride in alumni and former athletes going to cities and spreading the UK brand.”
I asked if this would liven up the local UK alumni events, and Jarmon seemed mildly put out at the implication. “They’ve already been really exciting,” he assured me, before acknowledging “but I think this is definitely gonna amp it up some. I’ve gotten together with our alumni club out here several times for events since I’ve been here, and it’s a good time. So I think we’ll be gettin’ together possibly for some Wizards games this year.”
Jarmon also offered up a couple of predictions about the Wizards upcoming NBA season:
1) Wall will be the pick. “If they choose to go any other route,” he said, “it better be DeMarcus Cousins. If it’s not one of those two guys, then I think there’s gonna be some backlash against the team.”
2) LeBron James will not be Wall’s teammate in Washington (despite some fevered speculation to the contrary). “That’s not happening,” Jarmon said flatly. “There’s a zero percent chance that LeBron comes to the Wizards.”
Sure, he’s just a second-year NFL guy rehabbing from an injury. But his sources were solid last night. Maybe it’s worth paying attention to.
