Pictures Of Guys Throwing And Catching At Today's OTA

Posted by Matt Terl on May 19, 2010 – 5:19 pm

Because two fields are in the process of being refurbished, all the players are concentrated on the one remaining grass field during the current round of OTAs. This has necessitated a few minor adjustments in the way practices are run. The specialists, for example, head out much earlier in the day to get their kicking in and have the whole field to themselves. The different position groups each have a little less space than usual during drills. And I keep finding myself getting workable pictures of only one or two drills.

Today, it’s the quarterbacks and wide receivers. If you’re not in the mood for that, you can safely skip the pictures in this post.

Chris Cooley's Mom Is Tough

Posted by Matt Terl on May 19, 2010 – 3:05 pm

One of the things Chris Cooley tends to focus on in his mother Nancy’s fight against breast cancer is just how tough she had to be, and he returned to that theme again at last night’s Cooley’s Rally For The Cure event.

“Even with breast cancer — my mom was going through chemotherapy and radiation — she only missed a month of work,” Cooley told reporters. “She never missed a football game. She was there for me for anything I needed. So when you realize how hard it is for her and for any women going through the same thing and what is really happening in their life, you definitely don’t take for granted the life that you have.”

I’ve heard variations on this a few times, but had never asked Nancy Cooley about it. Last night seemed like an optimal time, so I put the question to her bluntly: do you ever think about what you went through, look at a football player sitting out with an injury, and think, Hey, that guy’s a wimp?

A Clarification And A George Michael Anecdote

Posted by Matt Terl on May 19, 2010 – 12:02 pm

I didn’t have a chance to interact much with the late, great George Michael, and in fact the only specific anecdote I have about him took place on my second day here. Everything was still new and I was still completely blown away by the sports celebrities of my youth wandering by.

Michael walked into the office and was introduced to me by someone, I can’t recall whom. This was right after I did an introductory Q&A with Dan Steinberg, where I made a glib comment about ProFootballTalk and its founder, Mike Florio. So George Michael, who I’ve been watching on TV since I was a kid, looks at me and says in that booming TV announcer voice, “I’ve read your stuff so far. It’s pretty good. But you already messed up once: you do NOT [tick] off Mike Florio, especially on your first day. Just don’t do it. Other than that, good work.”

Then he continued through the office. I didn’t speak to him again before he passed away, but I’ve managed to mostly follow that one piece of advice, right up until today.

Jeremy Jarmon Is Excited About John Wall

Posted by Matt Terl on May 19, 2010 – 10:29 am

When the Washington Wizards won the NBA’s Draft Lottery last night, there was immediate cheering and rejoicing that the team would select University of Kentucky point guard John Wall with the first overall pick. Redskins second-year defensive end Jeremy Jarmon, a Kentucky grad, was so immediate that he tweeted “Wall to the Wiz!!!” a solid minute ahead of the pick actually being announced.

“Yeah,” he told me today, laughing. “I had a connect in the room prior to ‘em comin’ back from commercial break.”

Mike Sellers Helps Make Cooley's Rally For The Cure A Success

Posted by Matt Terl on May 19, 2010 – 8:00 am

“This is a really special event for me,” Chris Cooley said, describing last night’s breast cancer fundraiser, “because I have the chance to put it on with my brother and my mom. Being a part of an event to raise [money to battle] breast cancer with my mom is … it’s so cool. The way I watched her go through the disease, the strength she showed, it was so impressive to me. So to be a part of this event with her is really special.”

And it was. The second incarnation of the Cooleys Rally For The Cure was every bit as successful as its predecessor — and, for Cooley’s mother Nancy, it was also more memorable. “Last year was a blur,” Nancy Cooley said. “You were there last year, right? I hardly remember, because I was really sick. I [didn't] think I was sick, but now that I look back, I was. It was two days before I had surgery and … I think I just made it there.”

This year, though, Nancy Cooley didn’t just make it. She was a vibrant and active participant in the event, greeting people, auctioneering, addressing the crowd, and just generally running the show along with other son Tanner. (That’s her on the left of the photo above.)

And yet somehow, the most memorable moment of the evening didn’t belong to anyone with the last name of Cooley. Fullback Mike Sellers opened and ultimately closed the bidding on a pink “Bosom Buddy Basket” at a thousand dollars, then promptly donated the basket back to charity, earning raucous applause. Which, of course, wasn’t the point. Read more »
