DeAngelo Hall Offers To Join The Racing Presidents

Posted by Matt Terl on May 7, 2010 – 4:04 pm

DeAngelo Hall threw out the first pitch at Nationals Park last night for the game against the Atlanta Braves, and depending whose Twitter account you were following, it either “looked like a strike from the press box” (Adam Kilgore, Washington Post Nats beat writer) or it “was high and outside” (Rich Campbell, Free Lance-Star Redskins beat writer).

I’ll have more on the pitch later on (or possibly tomorrow), but Hall also sat for a brief in-game interview with Nats in-game host Clint Khoury, which the folks at the Nationals were kind enough to share with me.

Here’s the summary of what Hall had to say, for those of you who fear moving images.

Pictures From Mini-camp 2, Day 1

Posted by Matt Terl on May 7, 2010 – 2:57 pm

Practice today kept making me think of a scene from The Usual Suspects, when the cops show up at Kevin Pollak’s auto repair shop and he — unarmed — looks at this huge group of officers surrounding him and says, “Think you brought enough guys?”

There were plenty of guys out at practice today, somewhere in the vicinity of a hundred — signed players, tendered players, draft picks, try-out guys — and it was overwhelming at time. Again the tempo seemed fast to me, with guys running all over the place and … here, I’ll let Carlos Rogers describe it.

“Everybody’s running. We’re learning stuff, still working, but [Coach Shanahan’s] got everything on one page. There’s no walking around until the next drill. Everybody’s running, it’s crisp. He gives you breaks, but when it’s time to work, we’re working.”

He continued, “Good practice today. You know, a lotta guys are getting better, but everybody’s still working. They’re putting a lot on us. Lot of offensive plays, lotta defensive plays, lotta stuff for me personally. But everybody’s progressing and getting better, and that’s the most important thing.”

Lots more pictures after the jump…

Hail! The Comic Strip, Now Featuring Captain Chaos

Posted by Matt Terl on May 7, 2010 – 10:00 am

It’s actually amazing to me that Chris Cooley hasn’t been made into a cartoon before now. He’s got the onfield ability, the outsize personality, the superhero nickname … I mean, this one is a slam-dunk. It is, frankly, a crime that this hasn’t been done before — a crime that has now been SOLVED by the redoubtable Ben Ceccarelli, in this week’s installment of Hail!

(Is it wrong to admit that I’d totally wear a T-shirt with that Captain Chaos logo on it? If so, just pretend I never said that.)

(UPDATE: I meant an AUTHORIZED T-shirt. As far as I know, this Captain Chaos logo is entirely the product of Ben Ceccarelli and is protected by his copyright under the law. If he and the Cooleys want to make and sell these shirts, that’s up to them to figure out. If those show up, I’ll pass the word along. But there were shirts being linked to in the comments here that weren’t authorized by Ben, the Cooleys, or anyone else who might need to license such things. Please don’t buy them.)

And remember, kids: click on the first panel (or on the Read More link) to see the rest of the strip!

A Reader Imagines The Gold Pants

Posted by Matt Terl on May 7, 2010 – 9:39 am

Let me be very, very clear about this right up top: THIS IS A READER’S IMAGINING CREATED WITH PHOTOSHOP. It is not created by the team, and in no way reflects anything real. As of now, the only news we have regarding gold pants is what general manager Bruce Allen said on the radio yesterday: i.e., nothing.

If it were 1998 and this were a Geocities page, I would put this in enormous flashing text surrounded by unicorns and blinky lights: Reader’s Rendering, Not Authentic.

But even if it’s not authentic, it’s still very, very cool looking. It’s from Reader Urko in Spain, and he did a heck of a job. If the gold pants really do exist, and they really would look like this, I’m even more onboard than I was yesterday.

It doesn’t hurt that it’s Devin Thomas scoring a touchdown in the mud in front of the eventual Super Bowl champions, but seriously: heck of a job all the way around on this one by Reader Urko.
