So while I was watching first-round pick Trent Williams take his headshot, general manager Bruce Allen took to the airwaves on ESPN980 and talked to Kevin Sheehan. Fortunately, Gary Fitzgerald of Redskins.com was listening, and he’s posted a look at the meat of what Allen discussed:
On a contract extension for Donovan McNabb: “We know there will be a time and place to address that. Right now we’re focused on trying to have a good mini-camp, a healthy mini-camp and seeing what we can accomplish this weekend. There will be plenty of time to have those discussions.”
On restricted free agent Rocky McIntosh: “I’m sure he will sign his tender in a very short time.”
On Albert Haynesworth: “”He wanted to work out with his personal trainer and he says that has worked for him in the past. He did that when he was with the Tennessee [Titans] franchise. He went back to that routine and hopefully it works out for him.”
Allen is a master at playing his cards close to the vest, so, honestly, there’s not a lot of news there. But perhaps the most interesting bit of non-news had nothing to do with playing the game of football at all.

One thing I haven’t gotten around to mentioning from the Draft Day Party at FedExField was the official debut of the 2010 Washington Redskins Cheerleaders. This was the first time the newest cheerleaders would be performing with the squad, so I caught up with Marisa, the former Redskins Ambassador I wrote about at the final cheerleader auditions, to see how it felt to her debut with the squad.
“It took a while to sink in,” she said, “but now that we’re in the uniforms and performing for people and seeing the fans, it feels a little more real. As rookies, we’re still learning a lot, but it’s so much fun.”
She says the veterans haven’t gotten into any serious hazing yet, but she’s expecting at least a bit. “They did pull a few jokes today,” she acknowledged, “just keeping us on our toes.”
I had been impressed with the amount of work that went into audition prep, but the onstage debut means that the workload has, if anything, increased.
“We had about two to three practices a week leading up to this, and we learned the famous initiation rock routine, which was a lot of work but also a lot of fun.”
After the Draft Day Party, the squad’s attention turns to the photo shoot for the annual calendar. “I’m very excited for that,” Marisa said. “It’s a great opportunity and a lot of fun to bond, and also a chance to produce a great calendar.”
First time in uniform also means first time in front of the assembled Redskins fans, which Marisa was also excited about. “The fans are a lot of fun,” she said. “I got to meet a lot of them when I was with the Ambassadors, but just to see them all in one place out here was really something. It’s all been just great. With all the new things happening, we’re just excited for the new season.”
