Mike Shanahan Recaps The Draft

Posted by Matt Terl on April 24, 2010 – 5:48 pm

Here’s how head coach Mike Shanahan views this year’s Redskins draft, as he described it to the assembled crowd at FedExField this afternoon. No interjections from me, just the head coach’s assessment of what the team accomplished today, after the jump.

Redskins Finish Draft With Two Offensive Linemen, Fans Rejoice

Posted by Matt Terl on April 24, 2010 – 4:38 pm

First it was Erik Cook, a G/C guy out of New Mexico who (according to @LarryWeisman) was the MVP and Most Valuable Offensive Player for the 1-11 New Mexico Lobos. At 6’6″, he’d be an enormous center in the NFL, but he’s another versatile guy who has played multiple O-Line positions.

Then it was OT Selvish Capers, and this segment of ESPN’s Sport Science says a lot more about him than I possibly could:

http://p.castfire.com/GVrsz/video/296617/redskins_2010-04-24-163451.1671.flv

From a certain perspective, any more detail is irrelevant: the Redskins opened the draft by selecting an offensive tackle, and they closed the draft by taking an offensive tackle. According to @RyanOHalloran of Comcast SportsNet, that’s the most offensive linemen the Redskins have ever taken in the seven-round draft era and the most since 1987. For a large, large contingent of Redskins fans, that fact alone makes this a successful draft. Read more »

Redskins Select Terrence Austin, WR/KR From UCLA

Posted by Matt Terl on April 24, 2010 – 4:14 pm

I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised that the NFL Draft occurs concurrently with the Redskins Draft Day Party, but, wow it does make it tough to keep up with the picks as they happen.

Anyway, that’s WR/KR Terrence Austin up there. 5-11, 172 pounds of circus-catching excitement. Apparently. More from (and about) him as I hear it. Read more »

Trent Williams Gets His Moment At The Draft Day Party

Posted by Matt Terl on April 24, 2010 – 3:13 pm

When new OT Trent Williams took the stage at today’s Draft Day Party at FedExField, it was the first time he had seen a large gathering of Redskins fans, but not the first time he’d heard about them. His good friend (and fellow Redskin) Malcolm Kelly saw to that. “You know, Malcolm told me a lot about the fans,” Williams told me. “He told me they was crazy about their football, and that — coming from Oklahoma — it was the same type of treatment. That was really important to me, comin’ to an NFL team.”

And Redskins fans lived up the advance billing: Read more »

Players React To The Jason Campbell Trade

Posted by Matt Terl on April 24, 2010 – 2:32 pm

So it’s official. After yet ANOTHER long offseason of rumor and speculation, there’s finally something official: Jason Campbell has been traded to the Raiders for a fourth round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. The news broke while I was at FedExField for the Draft Day Party, so I was able to ask a couple of Campbell’s now former teammates for their thoughts on the news.

Redskins Select Dennis Morris, TE Out Of La. Tech (UPDATED)

Posted by Matt Terl on April 24, 2010 – 1:53 pm

Well, I certainly didn’t see that coming. The Redskins select Dennis Morris, a TE out of Louisiana Tech, with the 174th pick in the draft. The YouTube video embedded above contains exactly everything I know about Morris, and it looks impressive. Then again, it’s his highlight video, so it would be bad news if it DIDN’T look impressive. I wouldn’t have guessed that tight end was a need position, but … well, there you go.

UPDATE #1: Per @RickMaese, “Morris says Redskins tell him he’ll play tight end, fullback and H-back.” So that makes a lot more sense.

UPDATE #2: After the jump, some quotes from Morris’s conference call with Redskins beat reporters. Read more »

Redskins Draft A Redskins Fan: Perry Riley, LB from LSU

Posted by Matt Terl on April 24, 2010 – 11:23 am

http://d.yimg.com/nl/yahoo%20sports/site/player.swf

While I was sitting in traffic on 495 on my way to the Draft Party at FedExField, the Redskins selected LB Perry Riley, out of LSU. Here’s Redskins.com’s Larry Weisman on the pick:

Riley ran a 4.69 40-yard dash in his campus workout, so he has some speed. He was projected as a fourth- or fifth-round pick. He’s a good tackler and much better against the run than the pass, so I would expect the Redskins to give him a look at ILB when they’re lined up in a 3-4 base.

The most interesting thing about this guy to me (so far, given that I’ve never met him nor really seen him play) is that he’s a Redskins fan. Read more »

Reminder: Redskins Draft Day Party Is TODAY

Posted by Matt Terl on April 24, 2010 – 9:00 am

Let me get the disclaimer out of the way up top here. As I wrote in my first post on this year’s Draft Day Party (although I’ve re-distributed the paragraph breaks for added emphasis):

Yes, it’s the third day of the draft.

Yes, thanks to the new scheduling, that’s rounds 4-7.

But the point of this event isn’t actually to settle down and quietly watch the drama of the draft unfold. What it is is a completely free way to spend a day with fellow Redskins fans at FedExField. There are generally some terrific tailgates going on in the parking lot, the activities are a legitimately good time, and, really? How often do you get to be on the field at the stadium.

And what I didn’t know when I wrote that is that it’s also your best chance to get a piece of the old JumboTron just for making a donation to charity.

UPDATE: You can get your lite brite pieces in three places:

1. On the field at section 141/142
2. At the HOF store
3. On the club level at section 335

(It also bears mentioning that the Redskins currently have three picks in rounds 4-7 as compared with none on Friday and one on Thursday. That’s subject to change, of course, but from a density-of-information standpoint having the party on Saturday makes the most sense.)

Gates open at 9:30 in the morning today — which means they’re OPEN — and parking and admission are free.

The team’s first-round draft choice in scheduled to arrive and address the crowd around noon, and head coach Mike Shanahan should be there at 5:00 in the evening. (All times weather and NFL Draft schedule permitting — and the weather is currently projected to be relatively cool and pleasant.)

But wait, as they used to say on TV, there’s MORE! Read more »
