On High School Coaches And Concussions

There’s an obvious question to ask about the 170+ high school coaches that attended Redskins minicamp today: if they’re here for a “Concussion Awareness and Education forum,” what, exactly did they learn? And why learn it from the Redskins?

The latter question is pretty easy to answer: professional football teams deal with a lot of concussions, and they have the resources to get the best available treatment for those concussions. General manager Bruce Allen alluded to this in a discussion of Clinton Portis‘s recovery from a concussion last season.

“Because we have the resources that a lot of these high school coaches don’t have,” Allen said, “we’re able to get some of the best medical experts across the country to analyze him. He’s been cleared for practice, and you really have to be patient with a head injury. That’s one of the common sense lessons you’re going to learn, patience.”

So that answers the latter question, and part of the former: one of the things the coaches have learned is to be patient with these injuries. The other major lesson, according to Bowie High School head coach Lionel Macklin, among others?

Bruce Allen Welcomes High School Coaches To Minicamp

The Redskins hosted more than 170 coaches from high schools throughout DC, Maryland, and Virginia at today’s minicamp session, starting with a concussion awareness and education forum and continuing as an opportunity for these coaches to attend an NFL practice.

This initiative is an important one to head coach Bruce Allen — he’s previously participated in a Congressional forum on the subject — and it makes sense that Allen would start his outreach with high school coaches. Allen’s father, of course, was Hall of Fame NFL head coach George Allen, so it’s probably safe to call him a guy who knows the impact a coach can have on a life. And, in case it wasn’t clear, Allen lays it out in his welcome to the coaches. The video is at the end of this post, but here’s the crucial part, and the impetus behind today’s entire event:
