Players Discuss Pilates At Redskins Park

Posted by Matt Terl on April 16, 2010 – 3:42 pm

For all the love new head strength and conditioning coach Ray Wright has been receiving from players — and there’s been plenty of it — we hadn’t heard much about what I thought was one of Wright’s more interesting additions to the program: pilates.

The video above is some B-roll from the Redskins Health & Wellness Special (airing Saturday at 7pm on NBC-4) of the players doing mat pilates. More than 25 of the players, in fact, a turnout that even impressed Wright. “I’m surprised,” he said, bluntly. “It’s 2:30, 3:00 in the afternoon. Guys could be home, and they’re here trying to get better. It’s encouraging to us and encouraging to our staff.”

The point of pilates, according to Wright, is “to focus on getting stronger from our knees to the top of our chest on both sides of your body. So this is a really great artform to really work those areas, and that’s why they’re here.”

And the players seem to be buying in pretty enthusiastically.

Sean Taylor's Locker To Be Moved To FedExField

Posted by Matt Terl on April 16, 2010 – 3:25 pm

Hard as it is to believe, it’s been more than two years since Sean Taylor was killed. And for those two years since that night in 2007, his locker in Redskins Park has been glassed in and maintained as a memorial to him.

Aside from a very few pictures that have been made public, this is a memorial that has been largely reserved for the players in the locker room. Now the locker is being moved in its entirety to the Club A Tower at FedExField to be shared with Redskins fans.

“We wanted to respect Sean’s memory and find an appropriate place to display the locker he used every day at Redskins Park,” Executive Vice President/General Manager Bruce Allen said. “We know how much Sean meant and still means to our fans and we are happy to be able to share this with them.”

The transport is being conducted with tremendous care; pictures were taken to ensure that the locker could be reassembled exactly as it had been left for the last two years, and all the items have been carefully packed to avoid any damage in transit.

Santana Moss and Clinton Portis were two of Taylor’s closest friends on the team. Their lockers were near Taylor’s, and they’ve both looked at the pictures of him often since his passing. But both Moss and Portis gave their blessing to the move. Read more »

Back On The Field

Posted by Matt Terl on April 16, 2010 – 1:08 pm

The first voluntary minicamp of the Mike Shanahan/Bruce Allen era starts today, and it’s pretty much exactly the same as — wait a second, is that Larry Johnson and Willie Parker with Clinton Portis?!?!?

It is. And there were a lot of those moments out on the field today. Guys who are new to the Redskins. Guys who have been on the Redskins but have new numbers (Lorenzo Alexander in 97, for example). New coaches everywhere. It’s all going to take some getting used to, but the energy level today seemed high and the weather was gorgeous, so I suppose you can call that a solid start.

More pictures after the jump. Read more »

Introducing Hail! – A New Redskins Comic Strip

Posted by Matt Terl on April 16, 2010 – 10:15 am

The first I heard from Ben Ceccarelli, he wanted to know if I wanted a cartoon version of myself for Twitter. I find myself cartoonish-looking enough as it is, so I told him so and declined the offer. But he was persistent enough — and his work impressive enough– that it’s been my Twitter profile picture for more than a year now. Rocky McIntosh saw it and got one of his own, and Ceccarelli went on to do similar stuff for Andre Carter, Chris Horton, and London Fletcher.

From this entire experience I learned a valuable lesson: when Ceccarelli suggests something, say yes. So when he approached me about doing a Redskins-themed comic strip, I knew what my answer had to be. If he had told me that I was going to be a recurring character, I might’ve reacted differently, but he (wisely) did not. So — to coincide with the first day of the first minicamp — here’s the first installment of that strip, which he’s entitled Hail!

We’re hoping to have this be a weekly feature here on the blog, and I hope you enjoy it. (I also hope that, with a bit of repetition, I’ll get used to the existence of an animated version of myself.)

Also: it’s always going to be a multi-panel strip, so be sure to click on the first panel (or the read more link) to see the whole thing.
