Redskins Sign Defensive Lineman Greg Peterson

Posted by Matt Terl on April 15, 2010 – 5:24 pm

I’m not going to try to pretend that I’d ever heard of Greg Peterson before the Redskins signed him today. His statistics aren’t really the stuff that make the endless rotation on SportsCenter and the other ESPN properties: 16 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 14 games over three seasons. He was a fifth round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers when current Redskins general manager Bruce Allen was there, but he was viewed as something of a developmental project then, and he’s been nagged by injuries since, through being waived by Tampa Bay and spending last season in Jacksonville with the Jaguars.

Although Peterson is often listed as a defensive tackle (and the team’s release is listing him as a defensive lineman), I suspect based on his size that he’s being viewed as a potential 3-4 run-stopping defensive end. Which, perhaps not coincidentally, is exactly how this post on the Jaguars message board projected him when he arrived there: Read more »

Ma'ake Keomeatu Has An Enormous Skull

Posted by Matt Terl on April 15, 2010 – 4:22 pm

New Redskins nose tackle Ma’ake Kemoeatu has a big noggin. That’s the summary here. The difficulty has been in coming up with ways to demonstrate this fact. For example, the guys in the equipment room say that he wears far and away the biggest helmet they’ve ever seen in all their combined years in the NFL — but whenever I tried to get a picture of it, it just looked like a helmet that was slightly bigger than the already-large helmet next to it.

Enter Mike Sellers.

Sellers — who has a fairly substantial cranium himself — came out of the locker room today brandishing Kemoeatu’s helmet.

Then Sellers put the helmet on, found that it totally swallowed his head, and that he could swivel it almost a full 360 degrees without removing it. Read more »

How Colt Brennan Lost His Number (Twice)

Posted by Matt Terl on April 15, 2010 – 3:23 pm

As I noted when I posted the SHOCKING pictures of Donovan McNabb in his Redskins gear, McNabb himself is largely remaining unfazed by the new duds. Even in the face of catcalls from more casually-dressed teammates, McNabb jawed back and generally appeared completely comfortable in full gameday burgundy-and-gold.

But one guy who had to be a little bemused as McNabb took the field was backup QB Colt Brennan. Brennan’s been wearing number 5 for the last two years, and has made it into a remarkably popular jersey among fans — especially for a guy who has never seen the field during the regular season.

So I caught up with Brennan after McNabb finished his photo shoot to see if it was weird for him. His short answer was no — “I’ve seen Donovan McNabb wear 5 for a long time,” he said, “so it really wasn’t weird. Just the colors were different.” — but his longer answer was an interesting story about a guy who has now managed to lose his number, make a new number his own, lose that number all over again, all without any staggering cash payments or similar number-change gifts. Yep, That's Donovan McNabb In A Redskins Uniform

Posted by Matt Terl on April 15, 2010 – 1:02 pm

I tried a few different variations on the headline: “Hey, you wanna see something weird?” Or “A Slightly Unusual Sight”. Or even what I tweeted with a similar picture, “Well, This’ll Take Some Getting Used To”.

But in the end, I think the pictures mostly speak for themselves.

When a new player comes to town in the offseason, especially a superstar-caliber guy, teams find themselves faced with a problem: there’s absolutely no pictures of the guy in his new uniform, and there’s only so many times you can stall by using a picture in warm-ups, a Pro Bowl uni, or a suit. So you need a photo shoot — with a professional photographer, not me, obv — and you need a uniform, and this is what you get: Donovan McNabb in his burgundy-and-gold number 5.

McNabb downplayed any strangeness and said that he was getting used to it already, but … well, I’m going to need a little longer than a fifteen minute photo shoot to get used to this. Maybe I’m overly sensitive.

Anyhow, more pictures of this still-odd sight after the jump; click any photos to enlarge. Read more »
