Well, They're Not Dancing Around The McNabb/Elway Thing

Posted by Matt Terl on April 6, 2010 – 4:55 pm

I was a little worried when I wrote my initial piece about the trade for Donovan McNabb. I’m legitimately enthusiastic about the trade, but I was making overt comparisons between McNabb and John Elway — a Hall of Famer who’s widely regarded as one of the best quarterbacks of all time — and … well, it seemed like that might be setting expectations a bit high.

Apparently, neither McNabb nor head coach Mike Shanahan shared those concerns. Elway came up early and often as a topic, and no one was shying away from the comparison at all:

McNabb, in his introduction:

“Now playing under another Hall of Fame coach, and the things that he has accomplished with great quarterbacks like John Elway — a guy who I’ve been pretty much compared to throughout all my career so far. It just so happens that he stepped into him when he was 34; I’m turning 34 this year. And they finished John’s career with two Super Bowls, so hopefully I can continue to follow behind that. “

Donovan McNabb And The Hall of Fame

Posted by Matt Terl on April 6, 2010 – 2:51 pm

One of the more amusing moments of today’s Donovan McNabb press conference — declared “the most ridiculous part” by Dan Steinberg at the DC Sports Bog — came fairly late in the event. After a fairly serious question that prompted McNabb to emphasize just how much of a Redskin he is, a media member who failed to introduce himself offered up this question:

“There’s talk of you being a potential Hall of Famer. Your stats show that you’re at or about that right now. If you continue your success or have success here and perhaps finish your career here, would you consider going into the Hall of Fame as a Redskin?”

Response on Twitter was … underwhelmed, to say the least. So I caught up with the guy after the press conference to find out what, exactly, he was thinking.

Donovan McNabb Starts Fitting In To The DC Sports Scene

Posted by Matt Terl on April 6, 2010 – 2:26 pm

One of the pleasures of seeing a new star get to town is watching him get introduced to the various other sports stars and media grand poobahs. As far as I know, Donovan McNabb hasn’t been filling in at goalie for the Caps or anything like that just yet, but before the press conference today he found time to get introduced to a few of the local notables.

Sam Huff, for example, who — based on how happy he looks here — is probably threatening to sack McNabb on the spot.

Carlos Rogers On McNabb, Campbell

Posted by Matt Terl on April 6, 2010 – 10:39 am

Carlos Rogers and Jason Campbell have always been linked pretty closely. They both starred at Auburn, were both leaders on the SEC Champion 2004 squad. They were both taken by the Redskins in the first round of the 2005 NFL Draft. So it’s safe to say that Rogers has some thoughts on Campbell’s situation here in Washington.

The link between Rogers and new Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb isn’t nearly as dramatic, but Rogers has been playing cornerback against McNabb twice a year since that 2005 Draft, which means he’s got a fairly unique perspective on the new (old) guy as well.

Rogers sat down with Larry Michael yesterday and discussed all of this. As you’d expect, he said all the right things about McNabb’s arrival. But what was a little more surprising was his contention that this is a good thing for Campbell as well.

Chris Cooley On The Arrival Of Donovan McNabb

Posted by Matt Terl on April 6, 2010 – 8:22 am

As we all wait for what should actually be a pretty interesting introductory press conference for Donovan McNabb today, here are Chris Cooley‘s thoughts on the subject. He shared them with FOX-5’s Dave Feldman, apparently at a gas station on the side of the Dulles Greenway.

Nothing too shocking there, although it’s a good line about “It’s funny that we get the guy that talks about how much he likes to play at FedEx … to play at FedEx.” I’m looking forward to hearing McNabb’s comments on that same topic at noon.
