Ryan Diviney grew up in Ashburn, Virginia, not far from the current location of Redskins Park, and went to college at West Virginia University. In November of last year, Diviney was attacked in a convenience store parking lot in Morgantown, WV; he has been in a coma ever since.
UPDATE: This event took place when this was originally posted, Saturday, April 3rd. You can find more information on Ryan’s fight toward recovery at RyansRally.org. But if you live in or near Northern Virginia, there’s a more immediate chance to help: from noon until nine today The Dock at Lansdowne will be hosting an all-day outdoor event to benefit Ryan and the Diviney family. There will be an outdoor grill, a bar, and raffles, and beginning at 3:00 there will be a silent auction featuring items donated by area sports teams, including the Redskins.
And that’s not the only Redskins connection. Ryan has a friend, high school football teammate, and fellow West Virginia Mountaineer named Ryan McNey. McNey is a Redskins fan and a reader of this blog, and he sent me an email telling me a story that’s very familiar:
“One thing that Ryan and myself share is our die-hard appreciation for the Washington Redskins,” McNey wrote, “spending hour after hour talking about the Redskins and watching, through the good times and the bad, every Sunday. I believe that the Redskin’s fan base exhibits a family like bond in the way which we are all connected through our love for the Washington Redskins.”
McNey added, “I am not asking for a donation, merchandise, or any other gift from you nor the Redskins organization. I am asking to see if you could put a brief post on the Redskin’s blog concerning a local, die-hard Redskins fan and his story … Getting Ryan’s story out to people who may have never heard of him before, could be a beacon of light to the Diviney family.” Read more »
