Why Larry Johnson Signs Every Autograph

Posted by Matt Terl on March 12, 2010 – 6:10 pm

When new Redskins running back Larry Johnson was waiting to sign his contract, Gary Fitzgerald of Redskins.com and I managed to talk to him briefly about his feelings for the team. Between his talk of “a dream come true” and “grew up watching the Redskins,” Johnson started to say, “I have a story about Gary Clark, but…” and then trailed off to namedrop Joe Jacoby and Charles Mann as guys he rooted for growing up.

We eventually got him to come back around to the story, though, just before he was called away, and it turns out that Gary Clark — the great Redskins wide receiver — was a pretty big inspiration for Johnson, just not in the way you might expect. Read more »

Redskins Sign RB Larry Johnson

Posted by Matt Terl on March 12, 2010 – 5:46 pm

The Redskins today announced the signing of running back Larry Johnson. Johnson had several stellar seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, including back-to-back 1,700 yard years in 2005 and 2006. During that 2006 campaign, he also made the notable play of tackling long-maned Steelers safety Troy Polamalu by his hair, as seen above.

According to Robert Dvorchak’s Pittsburgh Post-Gazette game story, “The free-wheeling safety was dragged down by the long locks that flow out of his helmet during an interception return that will be re-run more often than a Seinfeld episode.”

Johnson’s post-game response?

“I mean, the dude had hair. What do you want me to do?” Johnson said. “They said that hair is part of the uniform the last time I checked. When I grabbed him, that’s the only thing I could get my hands on. It’s not like I was trying to jerk him down…If you know anybody who has long hair, you take your hand and run it through somebody’s head, it’s going to get stuck, and that’s what happened. Trying to get my hands out of it was the hard part.”

(Honestly, that whole piece is worth reading, including reactions from Larry Foote and Polamalu noting, “No, it didn’t hurt. It felt good.” Just an all-around bizarre incident, well-covered.) Read more »

Friday, March 12: Inside The Revamped Weight Room

Posted by Matt Terl on March 12, 2010 – 1:16 pm

The Redskins voluntary offseason conditioning program begins on Monday, which means that a whole bunch of football players — all of them, if new head coach Mike Shanahan gets his wish — will be cycling through the weight room. For some players, it’ll just be another weight room, worse than some and better than others.

But Redskins veterans, guys who are returning to the Redskins Park for the first time since last season ended … well, they’re going to find a dramatically different experience.
