Malcolm Kelly Watches His High School Teammate At The Combine

When I was talking to Malcolm Kelly about his offseason work and the like, he also mentioned that he had spent some time watching the NFL Scouting Combine. Which surprised me a little bit, because … well, because the Combine is actually pretty boring television.
But Kelly had a specific viewing interest that made the Combine a bit more interesting:
“I’ve got a childhood friend,” he explained. “We played on the same high school team together, both played at Oklahoma — and he did real well at the Combine: Trent Williams, the O-lineman.”
Now this was an interesting note, since offensive tackle has been mentioned as a position of need for the Redskins in the upcoming draft. So here’s Kelly’s off-the-cuff scouting report on Williams (keeping in mind that the two have been friends since high school):
“He’s athletic,” Kelly said. “He protected Sam [Bradford], at least before Sam got hurt last year. He’s a big dude, but he’s athletic. A big guy that can run that fast, side-to-side move that fast, he doesn’t let a lot of stuff get by him. You don’t see athletic offensive tackles like that.”
Kelly also offered his thoughts on Bradford’s potential at the NFL level:
“I think he’ll be exceptional. He’s got a real strong arm, he’s real smart, he doesn’t do things to put the team behind. Whatever decisions he’s making, he’s gonna make it where the team can succeed; he never puts his team in a bad situation.”
I asked how much of the Combine he had watched and if he had any thoughts on the other potential draftees, and he looked at me like I was insane. “I just watched Trent,” he said. “That’s the only person I watched.”
I guess it didn’t make the Combine that much more interesting after all.
