Mike Shanahan Also Speaks About Free Agency And Offseason Conditioning

Posted by Matt Terl on March 11, 2010 – 8:07 pm

Owner Daniel M. Snyder wasn’t the only one who spoke before this evening’s Charitable Foundation Annual Dinner. Following a brief introduction from general manager Bruce Allen, head coach Mike Shanahan also gave a few minutes to the assembled media. The coach sharing some thoughts on free agency, the imminent start of offseason conditioning, and a few of the more popular rumors surrounding the team.

Of note, Shanahan:

  • Acknowledged that RB Larry Johnson was in town for a visit but said that he hadn’t had a chance to sit down with him yet
  • Claimed to be “a big fan” of Carlos Rogers, whom he expects in town for offseason conditioning
  • Said that Jason Campbell was in the facility and talking to some coaches today; he also joked about not liking Jason as much as he likes Carlos
  • Reiterated that they’re following a plan, and if a meeting doesn’t work out, “it doesn’t work out for a reason”
  • Made it very, very clear that he both wants and expects pretty substantial attendance at the team’s offseason program.

And here are some of the quotes:

Owner Daniel Snyder Briefly Discusses Free Agency

Posted by Matt Terl on March 11, 2010 – 7:44 pm

Tonight is the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation Annual Dinner, which simultaneously represents the culmination of last year’s Redskins charitable events and the launch of next year’s initiatives. “Once a year we get together,” owner Daniel Snyder explained, “essentially all the people that help put together the fundraising, and it’s just so important to our community in today’s economy and everything, for us to continue doing this.”

Snyder was speaking to a small group of media before the event, and it provided the first chance for the owner to comment on the team’s relatively quiet free agent signing period so far.

Malcolm Kelly Watches His High School Teammate At The Combine

Posted by Matt Terl on March 11, 2010 – 3:27 pm

When I was talking to Malcolm Kelly about his offseason work and the like, he also mentioned that he had spent some time watching the NFL Scouting Combine. Which surprised me a little bit, because … well, because the Combine is actually pretty boring television.

But Kelly had a specific viewing interest that made the Combine a bit more interesting: Read more »

Malcolm Kelly On His Offseason And His New Coach

Posted by Matt Terl on March 11, 2010 – 1:02 pm

Wide receiver Malcolm Kelly didn’t have quite the breakout second year in 2009 that people were hoping for, but he did manage to stay healthy for all sixteen games, catch 25 passes for 347 yards, and save his best play for last — an 84 yard catch-and-run against the Chargers. That may not sound like much, but even 25 catches and 16 games is a marked improvement over the 3 catches in 5 games Kelly had as a rookie.

And maybe that’s a good sign: it’s in the third year that wide receivers legendarily break out, after all. And there are at least two developments so far this offseason that give Kelly some optimism for 2010.

Thursday, March 11: Redskins Sign TE Sean Ryan

Posted by Matt Terl on March 11, 2010 – 10:26 am

The Redskins announced another free agent signing today, TE Sean Ryan, most recently of the Kansas City Chiefs, but also formerly of the San Francisco 49ers, New Orleans Saints, Miami Dolphins, New York Jets, and Dallas Cowboys.

When this news broke on Twitter, the most popular question was a frantic-sounding “But what about Cooley?!?!?”, so let me say this: The signing of Sean Ryan should not cause any worry about Chris Cooley or Fred Davis.

Despite what the NFL.com video above would indicate, Ryan is more of a blocking tight end in the Todd Yoder mold; if you want to worry that Ryan is filling someone’s position, Yoder — currently a free agent — is a more likely candidate than either of the other two.

Gary Fitzgerald has more on the signing at Redskins.com Read more »
