Meet The Coaches – Jim Haslett, Defensive Coordinator

Posted by Matt Terl on February 19, 2010 – 10:36 am

The Redskins defense for the last couple years has been — to overgeneralize wildly — technically sound, highly-ranked, and prone to giving up (or not making) the big play. New defensive coordinator Jim Haslett doesn’t fully confirm that the team is switching to a 3-4 alignment, but he does allude to switching some of those trends in this interview with Larry Michael for Inside The Redskins.

“We’re aggressive,” Haslett says, when asked to characterize his defensive scheme. “We’re gonna try to have fun. I think guys are gonna enjoy what they do; we’re gonna do a lot, a lot more than what they’ve done in the past. I think we’re gonna be sound in what we’re doing, but more than anything I think we’re gonna try to be a defense that gets some turnovers. We just haven’t had a lot of turnovers here the last two years, and I think that’s what wins games. You get the ball back to the offense, and the more turnovers the better. We just haven’t done a lot of it these last two years on this team.”

Sounds good to me. Here’s the full interview:

Friday, February 19: Jason Campbell Discusses His Future

Posted by Matt Terl on February 19, 2010 – 9:15 am

If you look at the NFL’s 2010 league calendar, there is no entry prior to the February 24 kickoff of the NFL Scouting Combine. So clearly the league does not recognize “Jason Campbell Debate Month” as an official part of its offseason schedule. But, as we enter into yet another year of this back-and-forth — at least the third such season, by any count — the NFL really might want to reconsider that decision.

You can see the debate in the comments sections of this blog, on the official team message boards, and on nearly every football-related site. Already this year we’ve had draft experts predicting the Redskins would select either of two different quarterbacks, ex-Redskins offering their opinions, and the now-traditional longer-form articles and blog posts.

Yesterday, Matt Mosley of ESPN.com tried a slightly different tactic: he said to heck with it and went straight to the QB himself. And Campbell’s expectations for next season may come as a surprise to some, especially to some of the more insistent commenters on this very blog. Read more »
