Meet The Coaches – Bobby Turner, Running Backs

Posted by Matt Terl on February 16, 2010 – 4:18 pm

Next up in the Meet The New Redskins Coaches series: legendary running backs coach Bobby Turner. Turner has made the most out of some great running backs (Terrell Davis, Clinton Portis) and some that were never heard from again after they left his tutelage.

He sat down with Larry Michael to discuss coming to D.C. (Gary Fitzgerald again has a few of the money quotes.)

Redskins Name Larry Hess Head Athletic Trainer

Posted by Matt Terl on February 16, 2010 – 2:53 pm

The Redskins today named Larry Hess as Head Athletic Trainer. Hess was most recently the Director of Rehabilitation for the Redskins, after starting his career here as an Assistant Athletic Trainer. Gary Fitzgerald has the whole story over at Redskins.com; here are a few other Hess-related notes.

  • I conducted a long interview with Hess and physical therapist/assistant athletic trainer Elliott Jermyn (who has continued in those roles) waaaayyyy back in November of 2008, in which both guys were very open in discussing the workings of the training room.
  • Hess also earned a few minutes of fame by being the guy who got the phone call from Jason Taylor at 3:00 in the morning when Taylor suffered a near-career-ending calf injury during the 2008 season. “When people get hit in the shin,” Hess explained to me later, “I warn all the players, ‘Hey, if you have any problems tonight, if your foot gets sore, you can’t feel it, you get numbness or tingling, you get excruciating pain … call me.’ I’ve said that to a hundred players and haven’t had one phone call until this one.”
  • He’s also helpfully offered ten tips for YOUR rehab as well, over on Redskins.com. Being neurotic and somewhat whiny, I’m partial to number 1: “Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Communication between a person coming off an injury and his or her physical therapist is vital.” But they’re all actually useful tips.
  • He was a keynote speaker at the Fourth Annual Injuries In Football Conference back in April of last year; after the parade of injuries to Redskins players this season, I can only assume that he’ll be invited back for the 2010 edition.
  • Oh, and Colt Brennan once amused himself by filming a video of Hess and the other trainers doing the P90X workout, which Brennan misidentified as Jazzercise. Video after the jump. (UPDATE: There is some dispute as to if that’s actually Hess in the video, but whatever. It’s worth re-watching anyhow.)

A Whole Mess Of Links, Many Dealing With Quarterbacks

Posted by Matt Terl on February 16, 2010 – 11:32 am

Some things you might have missed from the last few days, including a metric ton of draft chatter largely revolving around the quarterback position:

Over at the National Football Post, former Redskins player Matt Bowen makes the case for keeping incumbent quarterback Jason Campbell. But wait, terrifyingly vocal anti-Campbell contingent! Don’t get too fired up just yet! Although Bowen makes a lot of the familiar pro-Campbell arguments (multiple systems, offensive line issues, still a work in progress, etc.), he’s not advocating that Campbell be retained and named the unquestioned starter. He writes:

Keeping Campbell around is the smart play for the ‘Skins. And it’s a necessity, in my mind, if reports are correct about Shanahan’s desire to start developing that talent at QB.

The ‘Skins want to draft a rookie QB at No.4? OK, understandable, but don’t let Campbell walk because of it.

Campbell is a restricted free agent. And because of that, the ‘Skins can get him for cheap – basically a one-year deal. Place a high tender on him and let him compete.

But the best point Bowen makes, actually, he makes almost in passing. “Since he took the job,” Bowen writes, “Shanahan has spent his time watching tape on Campbell.” And that, to me, is the key. All the debate in the world about drafting a QB or not, signing a QB or not, Campbell as starter or not … it’s all interesting, but a lot of it is completely moot depending on what Coach Shanahan’s seen in all that tape. And that’s something we’ll only know when we see what he does.

Which isn’t going to stop the debates, of course. Nor should it.

Tuesday, February 16: Meet The Coaches – Bob Slowik

Posted by Matt Terl on February 16, 2010 – 9:06 am

Bob Slowik is the new defensive backs coach with the Redskins, a guy who comes with a strong recommendation from Champ Bailey and who has worked with Mike Shanahan at a number of his stops along the way. He’s the first of the coaches that Larry Michael talked to for Inside The Redskins. Gary Fitzgerald has isolated a few of the crucial quotes on Redskins.com; the full interview is below.
