Redskins Hall Of Famer Bill Dudley Dies At 88

Posted by Matt Terl on February 4, 2010 – 3:13 pm

Super Bowl weekend is usually pretty joyous for the Pro Football Hall of Fame — it’s when they announce that year’s class of enshrinees — but this one is getting off to a sad start. Hall of Famer Bill Dudley died at the age of 88 in Lynchburg, Va. today, according to AP reports.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of Bill’s passing,” said Hall of Fame President/Executive Director Steve Perry according to a story on the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s website. “Perhaps as much as his greatness on the football field, we will remember Bill as a great friend and a true ambassador for the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the sport he loved.”

Dudley was a star with the University of Virginia, the (then-)Pittsburg Steelers, the Detroit Lions, and the Washington Redskins. He’s one of the 70 Greatest Redskins and a member of the Ring of Fame at FedExField.

He’s also one of only three players to achieve a football “Triple Crown,” three individual statistical championships in one year. But he was also the only player to achieve the even rarer “Quadruple Crown,” according to the Hall of Fame website:

In 1946, Dudley became the first and only player to lead the NFL in four different statistical categories. “Bullet Bill” finished first in rushing, punt returns, interceptions, and lateral passing. Dudley’s unique accomplishment is often overlooked since lateral passing is no longer carried as a separate statistical category.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Bill Dudley Scholarship Foundation.

After the jump, some of Dudley’s significant statistical achievements, and a video celebrating his Redskins career.

Madden NFL 10 Is Calling For The Super Bowl Upset

Posted by Matt Terl on February 4, 2010 – 11:53 am

Last season’s edition of Madden proved terrifyingly accurate at predicting the Super Bowl. Here are a few of the places where the video game simulation was statistically close to the actual results:

Final score:
Madden: Steelers win, 28-24
SB43: Steelers win, 27-23

Ben Roethlisberger:
Madden: 21/28 for 238 yards
SB43: 21/30 for 256 yards

Santonio Holmes:
Madden: 8 catches for 131 yards
SB43: 9 catches for 131 yards

Larry Fitzgerald:
Madden: 9 catches for 105 yards
SB43: 7 catches for 127 yards

This year, Madden is predicting an upset for the Saints in a 35-31 dogfight. If you’re the type who bets on the games, that’s a valuable upset prediction; they’re also predicting Drew Brees for MVP, although it looks like Video Reggie Bush has a heck of a game. Since they missed the final score last year by one point on each side, there’s a ton of room for improvement this year.

Chris Cooley, Outdoor Gear Model

Posted by Matt Terl on February 4, 2010 – 10:47 am

Today is shaping up to be quite the day for Redskins modeling red and/or hunting-related gear. First we had Devin Thomas shedding his red Hunters Support Conservation coveralls in some kind of strange bathroom modeling shoot.

Now we’ve got Chris Cooley on a fishing-expedition-slash-Reebok-modeling trip in a red Reebok sweatshirt and a whole bunch of NFL-branded hunting camo. I look forward to Albert Haynesworth ending up in the pages of Rolling Stone in a red safari outfit or something.

I only know ESPN Outdoors as “the programming that I ignore before football on Sunday mornings,” but apparently they’re a thriving entity with a web presence and everything, and their current top story is an account of this fishing trip/Reebok promotion with Cooley and Miami Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington.

If that description doesn’t appeal to you, well, you’re not alone. Listening to people’s fishing stories is bad enough; I thought that reading about them might be even worse, and that mixing in a promotion for athletic gear would make it entirely unreadable. But here’s the thing:

Thursday, February 4: Devin Thomas, Pajama Model

Posted by Matt Terl on February 4, 2010 – 9:22 am

The first I heard of this picture of Devin Thomas was a tweet from Tanner Cooley last night: “Tell me what Devin is trying to pull off in this picture?”

The obvious answer is “his red Hunters Support Conservation overalls,” but somehow I didn’t think that was what Cooley was looking for.

  • Legendary (and legendarily offbeat) Wizards blog Wizznutzz went with “that he big fan of Canadian TV?”
  • “Unclear,” said Dan Steinberg.
  • I suggested “Too tired to finish putting on my Elmo unitard.”

Obviously, though, none of those were correct. So today, Andrew Sharp over at SBNation is holding a poll with a few more suggestions, and I’m curious to hear what other people think. You can also see more photos from this shoot over at Young, Black, and Fabulous, although none of them are quite this surreal.
