Washington Capitals At FedExField

Posted by Matt Terl on January 29, 2010 – 3:45 pm

Way back in October, back before the Redskins season had officially gone south and long before the Capitals got onto the impressive winning streak they’re currently riding, a few of the hockey stars came out to FedExField for the Redskins game against the Buccaneers.

I wrote at the time about Alex Ovechkin kicking field goals pre-game (including a video of one successful attempt), Dan Steinberg of the D.C. Sports Bog talked to Mike Green and Nicklas Backstrom about the Redskins, Tanner Cooley gave Green and Backstrom a camera so they could interview Redskins players, and that seemed to cover just about everything that could be said about this titanic team-up of D.C. sports royalty.

And maybe it did cover everything that could be said, but while I was digging through folders from this season’s games for unrelated reasons, I came across a whole batch of photos from the Caps/Redskins pregame that I’d never seen before. Since the Redskins beat the Bucs — a Florida team — that day, and since the Caps are playing the Panthers — a Florida team — tonight, it seemed like an auspicious time to share them.

As always, click the images to enlarge.

Ovechkin and Boudreau

Ovechkin talks to his coach, Bruce Boudreau. Or something. I really can’t guess.

Backstrom field goal

Caps and Suisham

The Caps get some pointers from then-Redskins kicker Shaun Suisham, an avid hockey fan.

And the Ovechkin sequence. According to Mike Green at the time, Ovechkin went 2-for-3 and celebrated his makes enthusiastically. “He gave the two hands in the air, high five to someone,” Green said. “He was pretty excited.” I think you can see that here.
