I’ve written about London Fletcher’s pregame pep talks before, but this Redskins Broadcast Net video does a great job of allowing him to explain them in his own words, and away from the emotions of the moment. (The explanation starts at about 1:40. If you can make it through from there to the end and not want to run through a brick wall for Fletcher, your heart is made of wood.)
Some of the relevant excerpts, although it’s the kind of thing that really works better in the video:
- Linebackers set the tone: “The tone will be physical, it’s gonna be intense, it’s gonna be passionate, and it’s gonna be all out organized chaos.”
- Linebackers set the tempo: “The tempo of the game. It started with the kickoff return; we got linebackers on the kickoff, so they’re gonna set the tempo for the rest of the day.”
- Ain’t nothing change but the location: “Each and every week the only that changes is the location, and sometimes that don’t change, depending on where we’re playing. You just do your job, do your same things, be consistent each and every week wherever you play.”
I think my favorite part of the whole thing is this moment at 2:33 — LBs like I said, each and every week! — where Fletcher’s eyes get wide, his voice goes up just a bit more, and we can actually see for just a second how intimidating Fletcher must be on the field. Again, the video does it more justice than stills, but here’s a screencap for good measure.
Happy London Fletcher Day, everyone!
