Press Conference Scheduled For 2 P.M. Wednesday

Posted by Matt Terl on January 5, 2010 – 10:38 pm

The team has announced that there’s a press conference scheduled for 2:00 tomorrow afternoon. I’m sure it’s just to introduce the nine guys signed to futures contracts earlier today, so here’s another Anthony Alridge video.

If I’m wrong and the press conference is actually about something else, I’ll definitely let you know. Read more »

A Brief Look At Yesterday In The Locker Room

Posted by Matt Terl on January 5, 2010 – 4:55 pm

The dismissal of Jim Zorn yesterday distracted from what should’ve been the real story: the players cleaning out their lockers into large plastic trash bags and heading out of town. Luckily for all of us, the intrepid Redskins Broadcast Network crew was onhand to capture a little of the depressingly despondent scene.

What fascinated me most, though, wasn’t the clear plastic bags but the actual trash cans. These things were filled not only with three months worth of now-useless crap that had been nevertheless been kept handy all season, but with all the shoes and gloves and gear that the players couldn’t be bothered to bring with them. If you’ve ever been at packing-up day for a boys’ bunk at a sleepaway camp, it’s kind of like that scaled dramatically upward. Here’s a picture of the trashcan to demonstrate: Read more »

Counting Head Coaches

Posted by Matt Terl on January 5, 2010 – 3:46 pm

The first decade of Redskins owner Daniel M. Snyder’s tenure saw six different head coaches lead the team. We are reminded of this all the time — there’s a fairly recent version as the caption to the photo in this USA Today article.

  • Norv Turner
  • Terry Robiskie (interim)
  • Marty Schottenheimer
  • Steve Spurrier
  • Joe Gibbs
  • Jim Zorn

Count ‘em: that’s six head coaches. It’s mathematically inarguable.

Well, mostly inarguable; one of the six head coaches was Robiskie, who wore the interim tag after Norv Turner was fired midseason. And you could argue — easily — that an “interim head coach” is a different thing entirely from a “head coach”. That, in fact, the entire POINT of the interim tag is that it isn’t an actual head coaching appointee.

Okay, so five of them are mathematically inarguable. Except…. Read more »

Tuesday, January 5: Redskins Sign Futures Guys

Posted by Matt Terl on January 5, 2010 – 12:52 pm

It’s the big Redskins news you’ve been waiting all day for: the team signed a bunch of guys to futures contracts!

These are players who weren’t on the active roster at the end of the season but that the team wants to bring in to camp next year. And … they’re pretty much the guys from the practice squad (hence the Anthony Alridge video above), along with linebacker Darrel Young (who was with the team in training camp last year) and tight end Lee Vickers but minus fullback Jonathan Evans.

Here’s the full list:

  • Anthony Alridge, RB
  • Anthony Armstrong, WR
  • Doug Dutch, CB
  • Antoine Holmes, DT
  • Clint Oldenburg, OL
  • James Robinson, WR
  • J.D. Skolnitsky, DT
  • Lee Vickers, TE
  • Darrel Young, LB

If there’s any other news today, I’ll be sure to mention it, but it’s tough to imagine anything topping this for excitement and relevance to next season. Read more »
