A Great Way To Waste Time This Weekend

Posted by Matt Terl on January 29, 2010 – 5:03 pm

I’m sure you have all sorts of exciting plans this weekend, plenty of wonderful and awesome things to do. But the only football you’re likely to see if the Pro Bowl, and that’s going to leave you with some football-watching hours to fill.

Fortunately, the NFL Network has started making content available on Hulu, and the Redskins page alone can help waste over ten hours. What you do with the other 38 weekend hours is totally up to you. Read more »

Washington Capitals At FedExField

Posted by Matt Terl on January 29, 2010 – 3:45 pm

Way back in October, back before the Redskins season had officially gone south and long before the Capitals got onto the impressive winning streak they’re currently riding, a few of the hockey stars came out to FedExField for the Redskins game against the Buccaneers.

I wrote at the time about Alex Ovechkin kicking field goals pre-game (including a video of one successful attempt), Dan Steinberg of the D.C. Sports Bog talked to Mike Green and Nicklas Backstrom about the Redskins, Tanner Cooley gave Green and Backstrom a camera so they could interview Redskins players, and that seemed to cover just about everything that could be said about this titanic team-up of D.C. sports royalty.

And maybe it did cover everything that could be said, but while I was digging through folders from this season’s games for unrelated reasons, I came across a whole batch of photos from the Caps/Redskins pregame that I’d never seen before. Since the Redskins beat the Bucs — a Florida team — that day, and since the Caps are playing the Panthers — a Florida team — tonight, it seemed like an auspicious time to share them.

Redskins Sign A Long Snapper

Posted by Matt Terl on January 29, 2010 – 1:53 pm

Another futures signing for the Redskins today: Nick Sundberg, a long snapper who finished out his 2009 rookie season on the practice squad of the Baltimore Ravens.

Sundberg was the long-snapper for the Cal Bears in college, holding down the position for 52 straight games, and he takes the job very, very seriously.

“Nine out of 10 isn’t good enough,” he told the Daily Cal back in 2007.

And — also according to that article — he’s got a set of drills that I’m going to have to see to believe. Check this out:

Friday, January 29: Another Honor For London Fletcher

Posted by Matt Terl on January 29, 2010 – 9:46 am

ESPN’s Matt Mosley released his All NFC East team yesterday afternoon, and …well, the Redskins didn’t fare all that well. When you’re 4-12, I suppose you shouldn’t expect to have a whole lot of players honored in these things, but seeing it in black and white is pretty stark.

The two guys who did get honored were Andre Carter and London Fletcher, which isn’t really a huge surprise — one of them is going to the Pro Bowl, and I was pushing hard to get both of them there. The most obvious snub is the Redskins’ other Pro Bowler, Brian Orakpo. Here’s Mosley’s reasoning on all three: Read more »

More On Those Never-Created Black Uniforms That Everyone Hates

Posted by Matt Terl on January 28, 2010 – 2:47 pm

All the credit in the world to commenter Terence, who kindly pointed out that there was much more to Gameplan Creative‘s proposed Redskins uniforms than I showed in my earlier post. (My fault; I was completely misunderstanding their site navigation.)

And, since the earlier post kind of caught on a little bit — albeit not always in the most favorable way — I figure I’d be remiss if I didn’t share the rest of this stuff as well.

Apparently, according to the site, “Gameplan developed over 30 different uniform studies with the top 12 represented. The Redskins team helmet designs reflect the different uniform designs. In addition, Gameplan proposed an alternate Monday Night Special black uniform.”

Including, apparently, a few suggested Monday Night Special black helmets (click image to enlarge):

And also including multiple treatments of the Monday Night Special black uniform: Read more »

Brian Orakpo Checks In From The Pro Bowl

Posted by Matt Terl on January 28, 2010 – 11:29 am

Over the years, it seems like something of a standard conversation with an athlete — especially a rookie — at the Pro Bowl has emerged. You ask about the weather, his teammates, the ambience, what he thinks of other NFL players, and if he’s managed to avoid giving out his room number to people who want to charge elaborate meals and drinks to him.

(In the old days — like last year, for example — you’d also ask Hawai’i-specific questions: have you worn a grass skirt? Have you eaten traditional Hawaiian foods like lau lau or poi? Are you hanging out with Colt Brennan? But this year’s Pro Bowl is in Miami, so most of those questions are out.)

Well, Redskins rookie linebacker/defensive end Brian Orakpo called in from Miami and I saw no reason to mess with tradition. I’m hoping to catch up with him a few times as he preps for this weekend’s game; this conversation took place late yesterday, after the first day of Pro Bowl practice.

“First day of practice was good,” Orakpo said. “You know, we started early this morning, ’bout 9:30, with players getting’ acclimated with each other and getting used to the new scheme for the Pro Bowl, so to speak. They just keep it real simple. But it’s been good so far, I’m having a good time.

“Practice was real light for the first day, just helmets, going out there for little walkthrough practice sessions, everybody just sitting in their gaps and getting used to playing with each other.” Read more »

Thursday, January 28: A New Uniform That Didn't Happen

Posted by Matt Terl on January 28, 2010 – 9:42 am

There is still no news on any alterations to the Redskins jersey or helmets this season. That hasn’t changed. But the topic is endlessly rewarding for blogging purposes, that’s for sure.

As Dan Steinberg has pointed out, Chris Cooley was asked about a uniform switch in his NFL.com chat yesterday:

Q: Heard you guys may be getting new jerseys. You hear anything?

Chris Cooley, Washington Redskins: I’ve heard something about black. I know everyone likes the original whiote Redskins jersey. But it would be awesome to change it up every once in a while.

This black jersey rumor comes up again and again. Sometimes, the story is that it’s something the team was exploring at some point in the past. Other times, it’s something that’s happening in the future, either as an alternate or a jersey revision. During the 2008 season, a reader was absolutely confident in a series of emails that the team would wear some sort of black alternate for the game commemorating the one-year anniversary of Sean Taylor’s death. But it didn’t happen then, and it doesn’t appear to be coming up any time in the immediate future either.

Which is not to say that it wasn’t explored at some point. Buried in the comments on yesterday’s first post on this subject, a commenter by the name of mrbeef9 posted a link to a gallery on the website of Gameplan Creative, a “Chicago-based, award winning sports + entertainment branding and marketing agency.”

The title of the gallery? NFL Redskins Rebranding.

Here’s the accompanying blurb:

In collaboration with the Washington Redskins, Gameplan Creative researched and proposed an extensive rebranding initiative for the NFL franchise. Based on input from the team and Redskins fans and outfitters, we developed an enhanced identity which included a new home and road uniform, an alternate 3rd uniform, updated and new secondary marks and a comprehensive brand adherence program. The goal was to stay true to the iconic brand while evolving the marks to a more modern and merchandise-friendly look and to create a standardized style guide for a consistant Redskins brand experience.

As best as I can piece together, this was something that almost occurred almost half a decade ago, and — thankfully, in my opinion — did not become a reality.

A John Riggins Photo Gallery

Posted by Matt Terl on January 27, 2010 – 4:19 pm

These photos all come from a disc labeled “Riggins Slides” that turned up while sorting through a stack of CDs without cases today. At least one of the images is iconic — the pointed mustache headshot below — but most of the rest were unfamiliar to me and worth sharing.

(As usual, click on the images to enlarge.)

More Fans Take A Stab At New Uniforms

Posted by Matt Terl on January 27, 2010 – 2:40 pm

In my earlier post, the fan-created suggestions for new Redskins uniforms were largely done up in professional-looking layouts, often mirroring the actual NFL style guides. But plenty of other fans — fans without that level of graphic design experience — wanted to take offer their suggestions as well.

Since I wouldn’t want to discriminate on that — or any other — basis, here are a couple of the suggestions I’ve received via email. If you want to take a shot, go ahead and send it to me.

(Reminder: as far as I know, there are STILL no new uniforms in the works. Nothing has changed since earlier today.)

Here’s one from Marcel Virgil. I’m not a fan of adding black to the team’s colors, but it sure seems like a lot of people are. And that spear logo is really popular, too.

Wednesday, January 27: No News On New Uniforms

Posted by Matt Terl on January 27, 2010 – 10:22 am

Let me get the news-y bit of this out of the way up top: as of this moment, there’s no news on any uniform changes for the upcoming season. I’ve asked around a little bit at Redskins Park, and no one has heard anything about any changes to the helmet, the jersey, the colors … nothing.

The rumors are flying, though. There’s a 15-plus page thread on ExtremeSkins about the possibility, which appears to be Larry Michael’s fault. (Sort of. He’s fun to blame, anyhow.) We’ve been receiving a lot of questions about uniform changes on the Redskins Nation TV show — it’s a fun, easy offseason topic — and it’s easy to push Michael’s buttons about. It appears that someone heard him discussing the possibility, but assumed that meant it was a done deal.

It is not a done deal. Not by any means. Like I said above, it doesn’t appear to actually be, you know, HAPPENING. But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t people out there who have come up with some suggestions of what a new uniform could look like.

(To avoid any of the confusion that plagued the last similar discussion, let me make this perfectly clear in bold text: All of the images in this post are fan creations that I’ve found online. These are NOT official, they do NOT come from the team, and — for the third time — at the moment nothing even remotely like this is happening.)

Anyhow, here are some of the things people have come up with. (Click on images to enlarge.)

Three from poster dgnmrwrw at Chris Creamer’s Sports Logos Community, starting with the Home jersey:
