The video above is from yesterday, two of the near-infinite number of interviews consisting of Redskins players trying gamely to answer questions about the front office change. After Quinton Ganther gets finished explaining to people that, really, he pretty much just got here, Rock Cartwright talks.

And at about the the 4:27 mark, Cartwright says of the departing Vinny Cerrato, “I wish him the best, and hopefully I don’t see him down the road.” If you can, I advise you to watch that portion, to create context for what happened today. Because, really, it’s said in a completely non-aggressive, non-confrontational way. It doesn’t make a ton of sense on the surface, but given how many interviews these guys do every day, there’s always some slightly confused rhetoric, whether through mis-speaking or just being misunderstood.

This, apparently, was one of the latter times. Cartwright’s soundbite was played endlessly in local news broadcasts about Cerrato’s resignation, endlessly enough that Cartwright felt compelled to assemble another gaggle of reporters today to issue the following (completely unnecessary) clarification.
“First off,” he said, “I would like to clarify my comment from yesterday, because I seen it on TV and it made sound like I was saying something bad about Vinny. No, I was not saying nothing bad about Vinny. What I was saying was that I hope I can finish my career here with the Washington Redskins along with the new general manager, Bruce Allen. That’s all I was saying.

“I think it got taken out of context, so I would like for you guys to run this as much as you ran that story yesterday saying that I said something bad about Vinny. That’s totally not the case.

“I appreciate Vinny giving me an opportunity to even play here. He was here when I got drafted, and I thank him for the opportunity — he actually was there when I signed two of my last deals, so I thank him for all of that.

“But I just want you guys to realize that I have nothing bad to say about him; I just would like to finish my career here as a Washington Redskin. And that’s all I was saying.”

Cartwright then reiterated that the team is only focused on Monday night’s game against the Giants before finishing, “All right, you guys got it? Cool. Run that four or five times today, all right? Cool.”
