Could Raiders Fans Be Worse Than Eagles Fans?

Call it East Coast bias, call it NFC East pride, call it ignorance, call it whatever you want. Fact is, when I think of terrifying NFL fans, it’s the Philadelphia Eagles who jump to mind. The stories about them are so famous — and so ubiquitous — that they’ve degenerated into a sort of shorthand. All you need are a couple of keywords — booing Santa, say, or cheering paralyzed Michael Irvin — and you know exactly what I’m talking about.

Raiders fans, meanwhile, have always seemed somewhat clownish to me, with their elaborate “scary” costumes and spikes and shoulder pads and what-not. Raiders fans seemed scary like … like an old-school slasher movie, a Friday The 13th; Eagles fans seemed scary like getting punched in a back alley.

After talking to some of the Redskins players who have California ties, I’m beginning to rethink that, though.

Friday, December 11: Stephon Heyer Discusses Letting His Inner Turtle Glow

Yesterday, Dan Steinberg of the DC Sports Bog spotlighted this year’s University of Maryland Happy Holidays video, which features various Maryland alumni tossing around an illuminated terrapin under a a catchy Fountains-of-Wayne-esque little ditty about letting your inner turtle glow. (The actual meaning of letting one’s inner turtle glow is left deliberately vague, but it seems to have something to do with holiday cheer and … socks, maybe. I don’t know. Catchy tune, though.)

Anyhow, one of the proud ex-Terps who is letting his inner turtle glow is none of than Washington Redskins right tackle Stephon Heyer, so I caught up with Heyer and asked him about his inner turtle. Read more »
