London Fletcher Receives An Award (And A Few Other Notes)

Posted by Matt Terl on December 10, 2009 – 4:55 pm

Big day for London Fletcher today. After practice, he was nominated as the Redskins nominee for the Walter Payton NFL Man Of The Year award, and he was also selected for the USA Football/NFLPA All-Fundamentals Team. Head coach Jim Zorn presented him with a pewter helmet for the latter honor after practice today.

“I would like to congratulate you,” Zorn said as he handed over the helmet. “You’re an awesome player.”

This award, according to the press release, “honors the NFL’s most fundamentally-sound players who also commit themselves to service in their communities,” and it “recognizes Fletcher as an example for youth players – particularly linebackers – to emulate due to his” specific fundamental — in Fletcher’s case, superior angle tackling.

“I am very humbled,” Fletcher said, holding the helmet. “When you look at it, there are about fifteen hundred players in the National Football League.”

This seems like an excellent time to remind everyone to vote for Fletcher for the Pro Bowl.

Fred Davis Likes A Challenge

Posted by Matt Terl on December 10, 2009 – 2:38 pm

Since Chris Cooley suffered what turned out to be a season-ending injury against the Philadelphia Eagles on October 26, Fred Davis has done an impressive job of filling his shoes. Over that span, Davis has 25 catches for 274 yards and three touchdowns; 16 of those catches went for first downs.

And Davis knows that, awkward as it is to admit, it was the injury to Cooley that let him show what he could do. “It’s all about opportunity,” Davis said today. “You will never know what I can do, period, if I didn’t ever get to play. I already knew that. Lot of people, you know, ‘Oh, he’s a bust,’ lot of people saying that. I don’t let it bother me, because I know that once you get an opportunity ….” He trailed off.

“I’m doing okay right now, I feel,” he continued. “I’m not doing great; I’m doing all right, and I think I could do better.”

It’s going to be a surprisingly difficult task for him, though. Read more »

Thursday, December 10: Graham Gano Excited (In A Low-Key Way) To Kick In The NFL

Posted by Matt Terl on December 10, 2009 – 9:45 am

The picture above — an AP shot from the Redskins’ preseason visit to Baltimore — is the most exciting thing I’ve seen from new kicker Graham Gano. Gano was getting a preseason look from the Ravens, and this is one of his kickoffs; I’m impressed by his apparent hangtime. Not the hangtime of his kick, which you can’t discern from this photo, but his actual leaping ability, which looks impressive.

Anyhow. Gano answered a few questions in the locker room yesterday, and seemed all the things you’d expect: humble; confident and optimistic; excited to be getting an NFL opportunity; proud of his accomplishments in the UFL. It was a perfectly solid rendition of the classic new-athlete-in-town interview.

Here, look. Read more »
