Redskins @ Cowboys – Third Quarter Thoughts

There are three things I really didn’t like about that quarter:
First, the way it ended: Tony Romo hitting his first wide receiver of the day — Miles Austin, in this case — for a nice gain. I don’t like the momentum it gives, I don’t like the gain, I don’t like the idea of Romo coming alive. Say what you want about Romo: he may be streaky, he may not have it in the clutch, he may date pop stars and just generally seem kinda like a jerk … but I don’t particularly like the idea of facing him with a six point lead if he gets hot.
Second, I didn’t like seeing Chad Rinehart go down with an injury. Rinehart’s abilities are still very much in question — we haven’t had chance to even see what he can do — but watching him get hurt on the gigantic TV here was incredibly disturbing, as was watching them linger on him as he was loaded grimly onto the cart.
The last thing I didn’t like was the Redskins being unable to get the ball into the endzone. See also my final point above: a six point lead is better than trailing, obviously, but the team is really going to need to get into the end zone at some point.
But there were things I did like, too:
The defense. There have been times that Albert Haynesworth‘s absence has been notable, double-teams that could have been swallowed up by the big guy, times when it seems like Brian Orakpo or Andre Carter could’ve gotten loose, but on the whole they’ve looked very good.
LaRon Landry especially. Yet again, that guy is elevating his game.
And Jason Campbell is having an impressive game under heavy pressure; his stats after three quarters are solid — 18-28, 211 yards, for an 87.1 rating — but really don’t illustrate how well he’s played and just how little time he’s had. And there was even a completion to Malcolm Kelly, no less.
Redskins lead 6-0 after three.
