Sam Paulescu Seems Like A Pretty Straightforward Guy

When I wrote about new Redskins punter Sam Paulescu yesterday, I mentioned just how lively the position has been over the last two years, but I don't think I gave the basic numbers: Paulescu, assuming he punts the ball on Sunday, will be the fourth guy to that for the Redskins this season, and the sixth in the last two. I also recapped much of the bloggable zaniness of the last five guys who punted the ball, and speculated that we'd find out more about Paulescu's quirks today.
In a brief conversation today, though, Paulescu seems largely free of obvious quirks. Where Glenn Pakulak talked about the nomadic lifestyle of the journeyman punter and his side gig as a bartender, Paulescu sounded pretty darn goal-oriented when I asked what he'd been doing during the season.
"Training," he said. "You don't do the NFL and get a full-time job. I did help out at a local high school, a Christian school, back in Denver, and I love working with kids. So three hours a day I go there, help 'em out in the weight room and just coach 'em up a little bit. I love that."
Okay, that makes sense. Anything else?
"The rest of the time I've been training and, you know what?" This, I figured, was where he'd drop some kind of quirky punter bomb. BASE jumping or Le Parkour or something.
Not exactly. "Hanging out with my wife," he said. "Just got married eight months ago, and I can say I really enjoy the time with my wife. It's been a blessing to have that."
In the end, of course, nothing that Paulescu does off the field is particularly relevant to his stay with the Redskins, no matter how quirky it is or isn't. "More importantly than anything is the fact that we just win," he said. "I know that's just the bottom line, so whatever I can do to help, I'm gonna do the best I can."
Shaun Suisham seemed confident enough in his third holder of this season. "I think Sam's gonna do just fine this weekend," he said, restraining his own characteristic Canadian zaniness. "Things are smooth and went well in practice; I don't anticipate any issues at all."
* * * *
The team released running back Quinton Ganther to make room for Paulescu.
UPDATE: Word is that Paulescu speaks fluent Romanian. Is that quirky? I don't even know anymore.

Well Punchdafacist...Looks as if many on here have your #. You have been called out and been found guilty of sucking up to Master $nyder. What more can you say at this point? Anyone who isnt part of the solution..is part of the problem!.. You madam are a sympton of a bigger issue.. You are a blind loyalist and will fed on the regergatation of $nyders dinner. Until the fans make your Master change his ways of personel, nothing good will move forward. If Danny ever sold the team, Im sure you can find work sucking up to the Dictator of the month somewhere on the planet.. Try North Korea as a possible landing site for your love and apology of evil.

It's been brought to my attention, yes. I think it's because -- until this latest one -- they've been a pretty consistent source of entertainment. I dunno. It's odd to me as well.

What's wrong with the guy taking his game seriously? Who knows? He could work out. Hunter the punter can't seem to stay healthy. If the offense could score, we wouldn't need a great punter. Right?

No, no, it's great for the team. That's what I was trying to say in the last couple of paragraphs there.

Matt,
Why is it that some of Dans employees Blatche/Vinny/Zorn ect are coming to the aide of Danny and not any ex-employees. Why is it that the Danny defenders are all on the payroll? It is interesting that there are countless ex-employees with negative things to say now that he isnt holding their paychecks hostage? Do you think that Danny somehow trots them (Blatche/Vinny/Zorn)out to defend him, since he can not handel answering any questions in relation to this team and its mistakes over the course of 10 yrs? When he is implicated in so much wrong doing and dose not answer the call to defend himself, but pushes forward others to do his speaking for him...That in my mind makes him an un-accountable coward

I know for certain that Blatche was not "trotted out," that his defense was exceedingly heartfelt, and that doing that was very much his decision. Zorn wasn't "trotted out," he answered the question during his media availability. Those were the two that I was around.
I didn't hear Cerrato's show yet, and haven't taken the time to read the transcript at the Bog, but it's his show and he chooses the content.
As to ex-employees ... I have no idea. I didn't hear the call-ins on 106.7 that a couple people mentioned yesterday, so i don't know what was said or what their reasoning was.

Thank you for answering. However... I still feel that Dark Heart is a coward since he in unwilling to speak to the meyhem in Ashburn and speak to the counless accusations against his football management practices. He needs to take note from the Browns Lerner. He just lets this get so out of hand and his silence admits his guilt. I wouldnt be surpised if his wife and or children dont make a " stop being mean to my Daddy statement"

To be fair, they (punters) have been our most important and effective offensive weapon.

Maybe we should have drafted a punter. Oh yeah, we did, didn't we? Working out about as well as those receivers?
Thanks, Vinny.
Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Most comments here are on-point and interesting. To those few targeting Matt, consider pointing the finger elsewhere. Matt is just a fan who got a 'dream' job to be the official fan blogger about a year and a half ago. It's not his fault things have gone downhill since then. All he can do is keep providing perspectives that are unavailble to the typical fan who lacks access. He'd doing a pretty good job, too.
