Levi Jones Wants To Be Part Of The Solution

Newly signed tackle Levi Jones was onhand at practice today, working primarily with the scout team and getting himself back in football shape and up to speed. "I don't know if he will be ready that fast with all the terminology," head coach Jim Zorn said, "but he certainly has the talent and ability."

Jones agreed with that assessment. "There's a lot of work that needs to be done, you know what I'm sayin'? I need to learn Coach Bugel's techniques, I need to learn the plays ... I mean, there's a lot of stuff that goes into it. But if they call on me, I'll be ready."

In their offseason analysis of Jones as a potential free agent pickup, NFL Fanhouse called Jones "one of the better left tackles in the league," but noted that "the knock is that he struggles to stay healthy." He missed the last five games of last season with a leg injury, and didn't play all that well in the games leading up to then.

Jones says that's all behind him now, and that he knows exactly what was hampering his abilities.

"I had surgery in February," he said, "so about a month after that I was pretty much ready to go. I mean, last year, the injury happened probably the first day of training camp when we did our conditioning test. So I was pretty much without my whole right leg the whole year. They didn't figure it out 'til Week 10; I'd've kept going if they didn't figure it out, but they figured it out and there wasn't nothin' I could do."

Like any midseason free agent pickup, Jones knows what being signed means to his career. "It's a golden opportunity," he said flatly. "I look at this team and there's a lot of talent on this team. Lotta good players, got some good coaching ... I mean, hopefully I can be part of the turnaround to get this thing going."
