Kickoff Coverage Has A Spot For Everyone

Posted by Matt Terl on October 16, 2009 – 4:27 pm

Over at the Washington Times, David Elfin has a solid story today on the impact H.B. Blades and Reed Doughty are having this season on the Redskins special teams, in which Blades says, “People think special teams is a bunch of crazy guys running downfield, but there’s a lot of preparation and film study.”

This is true.

But after ALL that study is done, it all tends to come down to a bunch of crazy guys running downfield. That run downfield, though, is not the unorganized melee that some people believe. Each of those guys starts in a specific, numbered position — from 1 to 5 on each side of the kicker — and each of those positions has a specific responsibility on the play.

And all of the aforementioned crazy guys have a favorite spot in the lineup.

Hunter Smith Is 50-50 For Sunday, Also For Assisting William Wallace

Posted by Matt Terl on October 16, 2009 – 1:59 pm

Hunter Smith
may be available to punt Sunday. He stopped and discussed that with the media after eating lunch, talking in his usual easygoing fashion about knowing how far he could push his leg without risking reinjury and the like.

“Tomorrow after practice, I’m gonna punt some,” he said, “and we’ll see then, make a decision based on how that goes. We’ve done what we needed to do this week, which is to strengthen it and rest it. It’s probably a three week injury; we’re gonna try and make it back in two weeks.” Read more »

Friday, October 16: Chris Cooley On E:60

Posted by Matt Terl on October 16, 2009 – 10:52 am

Shaping up to be a busy few days for Redskins on ESPN. Brian Orakpo was on First Take this morning, where he answered questions about the Redskins and the Longhorns. Former Redskin John Riggins has been all over SportsCenter, venting criticism from next to the woodpile in his backyard. And, in much cheerier news, Chris Cooley‘s E:60 segment will be airing this coming Tuesday night, and ESPN was kind enough to send over a quick preview.

If all you want to hear regarding the Redskins is wild speculation about the coaching staff and detailed analyses of what has gone wrong in these first five games, this is probably not the segment for you. But if you feel like putting that aside for a few minutes to listen to Cooley talking about his blog, his artwork, and the egotism of painting himself, it looks pretty promising.

Also, speaking of Cooley’s painting, his art show has been moved to November 30, but still promises to be a good experience benefiting a good cause. More information (and a registration form) can be found here.
