Redskins @ Panthers – Fourth Quarter Thoughts

Posted by Matt Terl on October 11, 2009 – 4:44 pm

Despite the fact that the Redskins scored 17 points and the first quarter seemed promising, today did not end well. The Redskins have faced five straight winless-at-the-time teams, and they’ve managed to lose to three of them. Read more »

Redskins @ Panthers – Third Quarter Thoughts

Posted by Matt Terl on October 11, 2009 – 3:20 pm

The temptation, as the third quarter ends 17-9, is to say that the Redskins can’t help but keep these things interesting, but “interesting” is absolutely the wrong word for what we’re seeing here. The team is taking advantage of turnovers, which is what you want to see, but not of much else. The two scoring drives are for 13 yards and 1 yard, both set up by turnovers. Outside of those two drives, the team has 146 total yards and a field goal.

Jason Campbell has been harassed all day, and it’s starting to show up even on plays when there’s no one there.

And there was another questionable fourth down call that will be endlessly reviewed if the fourth quarter goes wrong, the Redskins electing to go for it rather than punting from their own 37-yard line.

Maybe “they keep things exciting”? No, that’s not really it.

They keep things stressful, though, that’s for sure. Read more »

Redskins @ Panthers – Second Quarter Thoughts

Posted by Matt Terl on October 11, 2009 – 2:34 pm

I’ve really only got one thought about the second quarter: I’m very, very interested to review that safety. Off the top of my head, here are the places that it looked like blame could be placed (in no particular order):

  • Clinton Portis probably shouldn’t have tried to stretch that play out from his own endzone; that’s never a good idea, but …
  • Stephon Heyer got completely beaten around the end, which was not good, but …
  • I couldn’t tell if Mike Sellers was the one who should’ve picked up the rusher off that edge, and, of course…
  • Calling that play in the first place in that situation kinda of seemed like a not-so-good idea on the part of head coach Jim Zorn.

I’m sure I’m missing someone else, but that was just from an initial viewing. Like I said, I’m sure we’ll hear more once the play has been reviewed.

Other than that, two repeats from the first quarter: Albert Haynesworth continues to be impressive stuffing the run, especially in short yardage situations, and … yeah, the makeshift offensive line is still going to be part of the story here. Read more »

Redskins @ Panthers – First Quarter Thoughts

Posted by Matt Terl on October 11, 2009 – 1:44 pm

A quick reminder to follow along on Twitter during the game. A lot of the more casual observations that used to make it into these post-quarter updates are now there, and even following on the Twackle module it’s easy to miss things.

Anyhow, that first quarter was distinctly different from all the other ones this season because, well, the Redskins scored a touchdown — the first first-quarter touchdown for the team this year. The first drive looked crisp, mainly because it was two plays long and Jason Campbell managed to evade the rush and toss a touchdown to Clinton Portis.

Of course, that was back when Chris Samuels was still in the game. Since Samuels left with a stinger (replaced by D’Anthony Batiste), Campbell has been sacked three times and things have stopped looking quite so crisp. Which is the thing to watch in quarter number 2. Read more »

Redskins @ Panthers: Redskins Fans Representing

Posted by Matt Terl on October 11, 2009 – 12:38 pm

Plenty of Redskins fans in Charlotte today, which makes sense. Not only because Charlotte is a relatively brief drive from D.C., but this was Redskins country for a long time, and those people are still representing.

I was told about so many Redskins tailgates here that I wasn’t able to make it to half of them. The pregame seats are filled primarily with Redskins fans. Read more »

It’s that time again. We’re here in Carolina, where there certainly seem to be a lot of Redskins fans.
