Redskins Rewatching Horrible 2008 Preseason Game For Motivation

The Redskins played this week's opponents, the Carolina Panthers, during last year's preseason. The results were not good. The Redskins lost 47-3 and gave up 228 rushing yards -- and it was bad enough that I was shocked the number was that LOW when I looked it up. I thought the Panthers topped 300.

So, logically enough, Greg Blache announced today -- during his last time addressing the media, for reasons that aren't entirely clear [UPDATE: according to Coach Zorn, it is for "personal reasons"] -- that they've been replaying that wonderful performance to get the team ready this week.

"There's no rest for the weary," Blache said. "We've got Carolina coming up; they've had a week off to get ready. They have two excellent running backs, they have two first-round pick tackles that are excellent players. They have one of the best wide receivers in the business. They've got a veteran quarterback, and last time we played 'em they rushed for over 300 yards against us in the preseason, so we've showed that to the guys."

Well, nothing motivates me quite like a review of a time when I was completely debacle-icious, I know that. Reviewing things that didn't go well never demoralizes me at all. Nope.

The players I spoke to, though, seemed perfectly fine with it.

"It gave me a little bit of gas, you know," linebacker/defensive end Chris Wilson said, "made my stomach turn a little bit. But that just shows the reality of the talent that they have. Both of those running backs, [DeAngelo] Williams and [Jonathan] Stewart -- awesome running backs, man -- they did not miss a gap that preseason game. It shows how disciplined we've gotta be."

Which led almost inevitably to the refrain of who has been slowing down the 2009 Redskins: if you ask the players, it's always the 2009 Redskins. "You know, we're our biggest nemesis," Wilson said. "If we do what we're supposed to do ... well, that's what that preseason game was about: it was showing us what happens when one person in undisciplined. Just a reminder to help us focus up."

Rookie linebacker/defensive end Brian Orakpo wasn't even here then, so I was especially curious to hear his thoughts. "First thing, I was like, 'Oooooo.' That score was nasty," Orakpo said. "You know, that was the first thing, but we've just gotta take it and now I'm just trying my best to learn from it and see where I fit in that defense, when they're running the ball so well."

But Orakpo says that this is a motivational method that works with the guys. "It fires us up," he said, "because you don't wanna go out with a bad taste in our mouth. We've just gotta use it as motivation."

Wilson was walking by as he said this, and he suggested Orakpo offer up an even simpler message: "Tell 'em 'That was before I got here. I'm here now.'"
