Pakulak The Punter Was Also Glenn The Bartender

Posted by Matt Terl on October 7, 2009 – 5:04 pm

Let’s get the two simplest and most important bits of information out of the way first:

1) Hunter Smith is NOT yet ruled out for this week’s game. “We’ll just have to see,” Smith said. “We’re working hard to get back.” There’s not much more that he can do at this point; “We know I have a strained muscle,” he explained, “and we’re just gonna see if it comes back in time.” The decision may not be made until Friday or Saturday.

2) New punter Glenn Pakulak‘s last name is pronounced (roughly) “Pack-uh-lack,” and he didn’t seem upset to be asked. His first name is pronounced “glen”.

Smith called Pakulak a nice guy, but acknowledged, “I’m not real familiar with his work. I know he’s a lefty.”

That one specific — left-footedness — has given Pakulak a life as an NFL nomad, wandering from city to city as teams bring him for weeks when they’re preparing for other left-footed punters. The lifestyle sounds less than appealing, being a one-week hired leg, but Pakulak has stuck with it. Read more »

Sherman Lewis Is Here To Help However He Can

Posted by Matt Terl on October 7, 2009 – 4:16 pm

Well, new offensive consultant Sherman Lewis was out at practice this afternoon, seemingly working with the wide receivers and generally trying to find his place in an established coaching staff. It’s not an easy thing to do under the best of circumstances, and Lewis freely admitted today that he was aware of the awkwardness that could be caused by his hiring.

“I talked to [head coach Jim Zorn] about it last night,” Lewis explained, “and to let him know that I’m just here to help. That’s all I’m here for. And see what I can do; like I said, I wasn’t planning on coaching, so I’m not looking for anybody’s job. I thought it’d be a nice challenge, I thought it might be a good change for me, and I thought I might be able to help.”

What Lewis is counting on to help dispel the impression that his presence is — as some have suggested — the “kiss of death” for Jim Zorn is … well, himself. “I’ve been in football enough to know about that,” Lewis said, “but I think if I handle it right and the organization will handle it right — it’s a very proud organization, a proud tradition here — and everybody handles it right, it should go smooth.” Read more »

Posted by Matt Terl on October 7, 2009 – 1:24 pm

Hey, remember earlier today when I wrote about Santana Moss dancing at the Play 60 event yesterday? And there was a still picture but no video? Well, the kind folks in the Redskins Broadcasting Network have rectified that. Here’s Moss’s Cupid Shuffle in its entirety.

Redskins Mania: Last Chance To Enter To Travel To (And Be Amused By) New Cowboys Stadium

Posted by Matt Terl on October 7, 2009 – 11:30 am

I’ve written before about the second-chance drawings on the Virginia Lottery’s Redskins Mania scratcher tickets. Well, today and tomorrow are the last days you can enter your non-winning tickets and still be eligible for the away game trip with the team to Dallas.

Now, aside from cheering for the Redskins, travelling on the team plane, and all that good stuff, there’s another benefit to making that trip: you will get to see the new Cowboys stadium, and you will get to laugh at the over-the-top ridiculousness of it all. Read more »

Wednesday, October 7: Santana Moss Does The Cupid Shuffle, Avoids Endzone Dances

Posted by Matt Terl on October 7, 2009 – 10:52 am

It’s Wednesday, so things will be getting back into gear. There’ll be practice, there’ll be more news about offensive consultant Sherm Lewis, there’ll be open locker room, and I’ll get to all of that once it actually, you know, happens.

But yesterday while the Sherm Lewis conference call was going on, I was at the Washington Ballet Studio at THEARC (The Town Hall Education Arts & Recreation Campus) in Southeast D.C., where Santana Moss was serving as one of the judges for a dance competition. This was a Play 60 event hosted by the Redskins Charitable Foundation, the United Way, and the United Way of the National Capital Area, and Moss took his duties exceedingly seriously. Read more »
