Rock Cartwright Reads, Does Not Have a Jet Plane

The video above should teach several very useful lessons.
- Rock Cartwright read to kids yesterday at Redskins Park, as part of the Redskins Read campaign.
- The microphone on my camera is not excellent.
- Cartwright’s real name is Roderick, his favorite number is (unsurprisingly) 31, and his favorite ice cream is cookies and cream.
- When given the chance to ask NFL players questions, kids will inevitably ask about private jets, cars, and autographs.
- If you put a large enough number of kids on a large, empty field, it doesn’t matter what’s in front of them; at least one kid will start rolling around aimlessly.
- Cartwright does not have a private jet.
Cartwright is the kind of guy who honestly enjoys the charitable events. “Bein’ able to come out, put a smile on kids’ faces, and being able to help out,” he said, “any time I can do that, I do. I have two kids of my own, so I try to get used to what’s goin’ on and what they’re doin’ at school, and I used to read the older one Dr. Seuss, The Cat In The Hat, stuff like that.”
(The younger child is still too young to appreciate being read to; it’s not that Cartwright has abandoned Dr. Seuss.)
The book Cartwright read today — like the rookies at the last Redskins Read event — was David Schwartz’s How Much Is A Million. “I think it was pretty good for them,” Cartwright said. “It not only teaches them about reading, but also educates them at the same time, going from a million to a billion to a trillion. So it kinda lets them know that there’s always more out there, which is a good thing.”
But which did they learn more about a million from: the book, or all of their questions about Cartwright’s material possessions? “I think they learned a little bit from both, actually,” he said. “Those kids were really bright, it was a good opportunity.”
Cartwright also took the opportunity to talk about the state of the Redskins after the win against Tampa Bay, and — unlike DeAngelo Hall — he was more willing to acknowledge what people were saying about the team, and credit it with driving them forward.
“I think that win was real big for us,” Cartwright said. “The feeling I got from the locker room after the game was that we became tighter. I think that win gave us more of that family environment, and I think that’s what we needed around here. I think if guys continue to play for one another like we said we were gonna do this game, and come out battling adversity, knowing it’s us against the world, we’ll be okay. If we can do what we did well in that game on a regular basis, we could be unstoppable.”
