Mike Sellers Contemplates Blocking For A Chipmunk

Posted by Matt Terl on October 2, 2009 – 4:34 pm

When head coach Jim Zorn today announced that Clinton Portis was going to be a gametime decision this week, he mentioned that Ladell Betts and Marcus Mason had largely been splitting work with the first team in practice.

Given that Mike Sellers is currently expected to play despite a thigh contusion, I figured I’d ask the 2009 Pro Bowler to see how his blocking style would change if Portis didn’t play.

His initial reply was not particularly promising. “It doesn’t,” he said. “Clinton and Ladell are two different backs. Ladell’s more of a power back; Clinton’s more elusive, more of a scatback.”

I pointed out that Clinton was frankly enormous to be considered a scatback, and Sellers agreed. “He is one, though, to be honest with you,” he said. “It’s just two different running styles. I’ve played with those two guys for a number of years, so to me it doesn’t really matter.”

But, I said, what if Mason got into the game? Sellers apparently hadn’t given that too much thought, and he paused for a second to consider. Read more »

Clinton Portis Offers Good Advice For Your Weekend Plans

Posted by Matt Terl on October 2, 2009 – 2:06 pm

Clinton Portis
had very limited participation in practice today, limited almost entirely to standing on the sidelines wearing a hooded sweatshirt under his practice jersey. And, sure enough, after practice head coach Jim Zorn characterized Portis as “really, a gametime decision” for this week with a lingering calf injury.

Zorn characterized the level of uncertainty as comparable to last week, when Portis’s ankles were the concern, but indicated that if Portis possibly could go, he would. “He loves to play and he gets himself ready to play,” Zorn said. “I want to play him. Period. That’s what I’m going to do. But I also want to be smart in how we deal with him.” Read more »

Friday, October 2: ESPN First Take Likes Skype, Photo Montages

Posted by Matt Terl on October 2, 2009 – 9:25 am

Chris Cooley appeared on ESPN’s First Take yesterday to discuss the usual subjects of the week — the decline of “this once-proud franchise”, the team’s offensive struggles, who is to blame for the loss in Detroit, etc. If you’ve been reading the blogs, the comments, the newspapers, and the message boards this week, you’ve got a sense of it.

What I find bizarre is the decision to talk to Cooley via SkypeOooooo! Video-conferencing! It’s like the future, only with so-so audio quality! — and then cover him with still photos and generic guitar music every time he talks.

Anyhow, if you’re into Skype and hearing even more about the Redskins loss to Detroit, here you go:

(Thanks to the always-excellent Matt Mosley at ESPN’s NFC Beast blog for the video, even if he did give the Redskins an “Overrated factor” of 9.3.)

(EDIT TO ADD: Of course, the Cooley Blog already has this.) Read more »
