Redskins @ Lions – First Quarter Thoughts

Posted by Matt Terl on September 27, 2009 – 1:53 pm

If you were to have scripted a first quarter for this game, it would more or less have to be the EXACT OPPOSITE of what actually happened.

Let’s quickly run down the list of concerns coming out of last week, shall we?

Last week, we had questions about the offense’s ability to score in the red zone.

Today? The team again moved the ball well right down to the goal line, and again failed to score. This time, though, they passed on the field goal and tried to punch it in from one yard out. The lesson? That there is most definitely something worse than settling for field goals.

Last week, we worried about the defense’s inability to get off the field on third downs.

Today? The team gave up a third-and-10 passing AND a third-and-13 to a QB scramble on what turned into a 99-yard Lions touchdown drive. And the scramble was made even worse because the team initially stopped a third-and-4, but elected to accept a penalty to try to move the Lions out of field goal range.

So, summing up: offense had the same problems as last week. Defense actually had worse problems than last week.

Yeah, that was NOT the way the team needed the first quarter to go.
