One More Redskins Video

Posted by Matt Terl on September 25, 2009 – 5:12 pm

NFL Films has been doing great work with the Redskins this week, between yesterday’s fantastic Jim Zorn/Jason Campbell video and this latest piece, a dinner with much of the team’s offensive line.

It’s an interesting look at the players off the field, and — although the conversation seems a little stilted at times, you really do get a sense of the personalities on the line (and, by extension, a sense of how much the loss of Randy Thomas for the season means).

I followed up on two quick sections with the players involved today. Read more »

The National Media Is Skeptical; How About You?

Posted by Matt Terl on September 25, 2009 – 4:23 pm

Let’s pretend, just for a minute, that you’re a member of the mainstream national sports media. Every week, you need to pick games, and no one likes the people who just picks the favorites down the line. So you’ve gotta mix it up, make some exciting picks, and highlight your STONE COLD UPSET FAVORITE MASTER LOCK selection.

You look at this week, and what jumps out at you? I’ll let London Fletcher describe it.

“When people look at how we performed in those first two games,” Fletcher said, “it hasn’t been great. So you figure, ‘Okay, a team that hasn’t played well to start the season going into Detroit, where Detroit’s gotta get a win to break their losing streak,’ we seem like the perfect team to do it against.”

Yeah, that’s pretty much what you’d say, if you were in the situation I’ve laid out above. And do you know how I know? Because it’s exactly what’s happening.

On The Field For Practice – Good News and Bad News

Posted by Matt Terl on September 25, 2009 – 2:16 pm

Practice today was a relatively light affair, shorts and shells in pleasant weather, and focused mainly on the red zone, which should make people happy. Jason Campbell got a lot of compliments from Jim Zorn for making good reads, which is always reassuring for me to hear on the sidelines, and the team seemed as loose and focused as they have at any point in this bizarre week.

But the real stories of practice came afterward, in the form of some good news and some bad news. Here’s a picture to help you guess the good news.

No, Colt Brennan is not going to be playing quarterback (although he is back in the facility and in generally good spirits.)

The good news is that Chad Rinehart will be starting at right guard. Zorn walked to the podium and said “The Rhino!”, thus preempting Washington Post reporter Jason Reid, who had been extremely excited to ask if it would be The Thrill (Will Montgomery) or The Rhino.

Friday, September 25: Burgundy and Gold and … Pink?

Posted by Matt Terl on September 25, 2009 – 9:24 am

At the next home game, October 4 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Redskins will participating in the league-wide “A Crucial Catch” breast cancer awareness campaign. Tanya Snyder will be the official Coin Toss Observer, and — like last year — Zeta Tau Alpha sorority members will be distributing pink ribbons and education cards outside the stadium.

Also, lots and lots of the in-game … stuff, for lack of a better term, will be pink. Pink captains patches, receiver gloves, goalpost padding, field stencils, helmet stickers, K-balls, wristbands, gloves, sideline caps, and so on. There’s even pink trim on the referees uniforms for the day. And a few player, including Chris Cooley and Clinton Portis, are scheduled to be wearing pink cleats.

The game-worn pink gear will be autographed post-game and auctioned off for charity at NFL Auction. And there really is a whole lot of it. Read more »
