Afternoon Practice – One More Hazing

Posted by Matt Terl on August 20, 2009 – 6:11 pm

Well, I’m glad I posted my enthusiastic defense of hazing this morning, since the high point of the afternoon practice was Albert Haynesworth, Phillip Daniels, and Cornelius Griffin — mainly Haynesworth — doing an incredibly thorough soak-and-tape on all the remaining rookies at once.

And, at this point, there’s little doubt that Haynesworth brings an element to this team that we haven’t seen in awhile.

Potential Redskins Reality Shows

Posted by Matt Terl on August 20, 2009 – 3:30 pm

I will give you one guess how this one ends.

Anyhow, once I got over being completely and utterly dumbfounded that Santana Moss is a fan of Gossip Girl, the conversation moved on to his other favorite TV genre: reality shows. It would’ve been easy enough to let the subject drop, but in honor of the season premieres of Top Chef (which I watch) and Project Runway (which I don’t) — along with the fascinating experiment in psychological torture that is this season of Big Brother — I figured I’d press for some details.

“I’m a fan of a lot of reality shows for sure, man,” Moss said. “I also watch the E! Channel a lot. I watch the Kardashian show, I used to watch the Girls Next Door show. I watch all that crazy stuff, man. It’s just reality TV, you know? It’s stuff that’s going on right now and that — you can tell some of it they’re probably acting on certain parts, but some it’s just their life, you know? Their reality. So I be tuning in to see what’s going on with them.”

So the obvious question, when an NFL wide receiver tells you he’s a fan of reality shows, is: have you ever considered getting one of your own?

Santana Moss Talks TV Shows

Posted by Matt Terl on August 20, 2009 – 2:39 pm

Santana Moss is one of those pop-culture guys, always singing the theme song to some eighties cartoon or repurposing the melody to a current radio hit to suit his own Santana-centric lyrics. It’s just the way he is, and not something I ever really discussed with him. Until today, when he was sitting in one of the ice tubs, shouting lines from South Park.

“I’m not a huge fan,” Moss said of the Comedy Central show, “but when I broke my jaw in college, they called me Kenny.” This was followed by an amusing but pretty much un-transcribe-able imitation of the parka-muffled South Park character. For the sake of completeness, it was something roughly along the lines of : “Mmmmmmmmmmmmm! MMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!”

The conversation eventually wound its way to a fairly detailed discussion of reality TV — and more on that in just a few minutes — but before then, Moss offered recommendations of a few of his favorite shows, and at least one of them came as a substantial surprise to me.

Morning Practice – Marko Mitchell Looks Good; So Does Randle El

Posted by Matt Terl on August 20, 2009 – 12:19 pm

This morning’s practice — the last morning practice of “training camp,” meaning that the guys in the hotel will be heading home — seemed a little sluggish to me, as if guys are starting to feel the grind of the last three-plus weeks. It was a shorts-and-shells practice, and the big story afterward was Marko Mitchell.

Mitchell had a couple of nice catches during the practice, although probably not enough to start a post-practice media firestorm. To do that, you need a good old fashioned inflammatory quote — like this one from Clinton Portis, talking to the TV cameras (as transcribed by Dan Steinberg):

“Marko Mitchell is killing Carlos Rogers in practice. I’m talking about, he can not stop him. So y’all make sure y’all pump Marko up on TV, because Carlos is in trouble. He in trouble. He ain’t stopped him yet this whole camp.” Read more »

Thursday, August 20: More About The Goalpost Tapings

Posted by Matt Terl on August 20, 2009 – 8:28 am

The recent spate of rookie hazing prompted a little more concern from people than I thought it would. I was actually excited to see the hazing in the same way that I was a little pleased to see Marko Mitchell’s fights earlier in camp: these are things that show some spark, some fire, some liveliness beyond the basic nose-to-the-grind work ethic of training camp. I like them from a blogging perspective, yeah, but I’m also of the opinion that they’re good for team chemistry, too.

But it’s not my opinion that really matters.

“Absolutely it builds camaraderie,” London Fletcher told me, “because, you know, you’re in training camp. You’re out here working so hard, grinding, and it’s just a part of the whole experience, the training camp ritual that you pass down from year to year.”

Casey Rabach agreed. “It’s part of training camp, you know? Everybody kinda pays their dues, and that’s just one of ‘em.”

Mike Sellers feels the same way, but also raised the larger question: “You know, Coach Zorn doesn’t believe in that stuff, and I don’t know how those guys got away with it. He made sure last year that the hazing stopped.” Which, obviously, has changed. Read more »
