Fan Appreciation Day A Success

Posted by Matt Terl on August 8, 2009 – 5:09 pm

The warnings were dire. Everyone was telling newer employees, new beat reporters, anyone who didn’t attend last year’s Fan Appreciation Day: get here early. Prepare for traffic. Expect delays.

And in the end everything — with the possible exception of the interview scrum for Clinton Portis above — ran completely smoothly, thanks in large part to some help from Loudoun County and a generous neighbor. The team was able to double the parking from last season, and there was triple the police presence to direct traffic in and out.

Coach Zorn Addresses The Crowd (Updated With Transcript)

Posted by Matt Terl on August 8, 2009 – 5:00 pm

Courtesy of Redskins Broadcast Network, here’s Coach Jim Zorn’s pre-practice address to the crowd, in which he talks about the defense being ahead of the offense, lays out the team’s ultimate goals, and accidentally refers to rookie Kevin Barnes as “Keith”.

(UPDATE: Yes, I know the image appears to be some random kid, not Coach Zorn as you might expect. There’s a commercial in the preroll, because it’s RBN footage, and the software has incorrectly guessed that the kid from the commercial makes for the best thumbnail image. I promise you’ll see Coach Zorn, not Random Kid, once the thing gets going.)

According to Rick Maese’s Twitter feed, Barnes’ reaction to the misidentification was, “I gotta prove myself out there.”

(UPDATE 2: Transcript after the jump.) Read more »

Meet Doug Dutch's Cheering Section

Posted by Matt Terl on August 8, 2009 – 4:11 pm

Getting my scrimmage update together now — although I hope everyone was also following along on Twitter — but in the meantime, here’s a follow-up on that previous post: Doug Dutch‘s dad introducing Doug’s cheering section.

Doug Dutch Has Quite The Fan Club

Posted by Matt Terl on August 8, 2009 – 12:42 pm

Cornerback Doug Dutch may be something of a longshot to make the roster. He’s got a crowd ahead of him, including a drafted rookie in Kevin Barnes, veteran leadership in Fred Smoot and Carlos Rogers, and a highly-paid free agent acquisition in DeAngelo Hall, among others. But one thing he’s not hurting for is support.

That’s a group of about fourteen boisterous, loving people, including Dutch’s mother, father, cousins, high school friends and acquaitances, and — for all I know — everyone else he’s ever met. They’re set up along sidelines hoping to see Dutch — who grew up hating the Cowboys, according to Dan Steinberg — get a chance to do something in the scrimmage.

And they’re wearing custom shirts, too. On one side, they read “Homegrown Redskin,” and on the other, this: Read more »

Fan Appreciation: Sean Taylor Jerseys

Posted by Matt Terl on August 8, 2009 – 11:33 am

Based on my informal observations over the course of training camp, the late Sean Taylor’s 21 jersey remains one of the most popular among fans. And they come in all variations: the black shadow 21 jersey, the white, the burgundy, the weird gray one with black and burgundy numbers, the University of Miami jersey, and the Pro Bowl jersey.

But perhaps the most remarkable 21 jersey I saw this week wasn’t t even sporting the number 21.

That’s it in the middle there, the blue number 1. It’s Taylor’s jersey from Gulliver Preparatory School, plus patches representing Taylor’s time with The U and the Redskins, and William Cox made it himself.

Cox operates a company that makes uniforms and similar gear, so to him this was a straightforward project. His friend suggested it, and he delivered. “He was like, ‘Could you make a copy of this jersey’,” Cox told me, ” so I just ordered a royal blue jersey and put everything on it. I do embroidery and stuff, so the only thing that cost money was this [Miami] patch off Ebay, everything else I can do myself.”

Don’t go looking for these in stores, though. “I only made two of them,” Cox says, “and I usually only make one-of-a-kinds. You might’ve seen it because my buddy Scott sent out a facebook picture, which I tell him not to do.”

More of this Taylor jersey — and a few others — after the jump.

Saturday, August 8: Fan Appreciation Day Is Here

Posted by Matt Terl on August 8, 2009 – 9:25 am

Those first fans from the first day of training camp, the guys who showed up before 6:00 to wait in the median of Loudoun County Parkway? They’ve got some competition. These first fans got to the gates today at 4:00 a.m. The parking lots weren’t even scheduled to open until 9:00, let alone the gates. And they didn’t have any fancy-pants grill or raisin bread or tailgating gear. “We brought pop tarts,” Spencer Walker says. “Raw pop tarts.” Read more »
