Marcus Mason Tries Again
I refer to running back Marcus Mason as a fan-favorite a lot, but calling him that does him something of a disservice. The local-guy-made-good didn't just impress the fans last preseason; he led the league in preseason rush yards and stood out to his teammates, too. Especially the Redskins other preseason star and fan-favorite: when you ask Colt Brennan about Marcus Mason, the superlatives just start flowing. "He's a natural football player," Brennan tells me, "a natural baller . I can't tell you how many times in the preseason last year it was so nice to have him, because he would make good plays, make good runs. You only get so many chances when you're young, and you've got a running back like that, gaining extra yards, picking up first downs for you, doing the little things.
"My second touchdown pass was to him," Brennan continues, barely pausing for breath. "He got me a ton of extra live reps, because he was able to extend our drives. We really had a great combination of run and pass with him in the games. He played unbelievable last year in the preseason, and he's done just as well this year, and I think everybody knows that he's a great football player."
Asking Mason about Mason earns a slightly less effusive answer, although almost any answer would've been less effusive than Brennan's.
"I'm doing pretty well," he says when asked about this latest chance. "I've picked up on the offense pretty fast. Last year I was out trying to learn it and I was worried about whether I'm going the right way or if I'm not, now I'm comfortable and ready to have fun."
And Mason understands why he wasn't able to stick last season despite his impressive statistics. "Pretty much they didn't feel that they needed four running backs," he says. "Clinton, Ladell, Rock and Mike, they didn't need an extra guy."
That logjam hasn't let up this year, either. Mason has one year of practice squad eligibility left, but there are things he's trying to do to make the active roster. "Special teams," he says bluntly. "I've got to be excellent on special teams and that's what I'm working for. Being on these other teams' practice squads, that's all I've been doing is special teams, so I feel like I'm really up on it."
Mason's not really being looked at for the kickoff return position, although he's currently stationed as the up-back there. So what he's doing on special teams isn't necessarily going to be flashy or noticeable. But that, even more than his ability to run with the ball, is what might give him a chance to make this squad alongside the established veterans.
It's a position that Brennan understand well. "There's just a lot of talent on the team right now," Brennan says, still speaking in a rush. "So he's obviously in a tough uphill battle where there's a lot of talent already in front of you but you know you're a baller too. He's just got to go in there this preseason and do the same thing he did last year, and continue to show that he's the guy we need to put in there, and good things are going to happen."

I love this post. It reveals a lot about how the young players see the situation with the team right now.
And reflects a lot about their own attitudes and team spirit!

Give him a roster spot already. I enjoy watching him make plays, and if you watch him do it in one regular season game, others will open their eyes. End of story!!

I saw we trade betts for a 4th round pick or something and have mason and aldrige(I think that's his name). Ladell Betts is just a watered down Portis. Aldrige brings a new dimension to our run game.

marcus mason looked great in preseason last year. but i think if were going to keep a third RB and release rock cartwright then instead of just ST coverage he needs to return. Anthony

I think the effort the Skins showed in re-aquiring Mason helps to show just how highly they think of the guy. With the depth that we seem to have all around, this year, I'm greatly looking forward to the upcoming preseason.
Hail to the Redskins! Lets GET THAT RING!

This says as much about Brennan as it does Mason. I'm in the Cult of Colt because he has fire and moxie, which I love in a leadership role. Call Jason the better quarterback if you want, but it's Colt I'd rather go into battle with. He's got the Favre thing; no matter when or where he goes into the game, I feel we have a chance to drive down the field. I'll take flak for that, but ohwell. Jason is so cool, it seems we fall asleep. Brennan comes in and the energy ratchets up. I love his enthusiasm!!
That's just me of course. May the better man get the ball.
And best of luck, Marcus!

Any shot at cutting betts to keep mason? I like betts but mason runs with passion. I think he has great potential. I'd hate to see cartwright go for him to get the job, but at what point do we make the tough decision? By the time Portis is done, Betts will be too old to be the future. Time to invest in Mason

I'm sorry, but he needs to be on this roster. I love Rock, but he isn't providing anything for us. Be it Aldridge or Mason someone needs to replace Rock. Would love for Betts to be gone too, but thats not happening IRL.
In a dream situation it would be Portis/Mason/Aldridge...but I can live with Portis/Betts/Mason or Aldridge

I am a senior now at Youngstown State University and I can remember watching Mason run the ball for the Penguins my Freshman year. He was a beast!!! I have been a Redskins fan all my life and seeing a player from my future alma matter playing for my all time favorite team is awesome. I have been rooting for Mason to make the roster since he came into the league two years ago and I think now more than ever is his time to shine. He tore it up last pre-season, just give him a shot and see what he does with it. Rock Cartwright can be replaced in my opinion. GO SKINS!!!
