When “news” “broke” about DeAngelo Hall‘s precipitous dip in the rankings on EA Sports’ upcoming Madden 10 videogame, I figured it would be good for a quick, mildly amusing post. I’d get a quote or two from Hall, link back to the Ethan Albright thing, and that would be it until — hopefully — midway through the season, when we would all look back and marvel at how inaccurate those rankings had proved to be.
Well, not exactly. The original story had Hall being ranked a (ridiculously, insultingly low) 68, but EA Sports Community Manager Will Kinsler set me straight on that via Twitter (he’s @raczilla) last night:
Heads up. @dhall23 ‘s rating is 79 in Madden this year, not 68. And that’s with new stretched out ratings….
Fair enough. Was the 68 reported incorrectly, or was the ranking changed?
Wasn’t reported wrong, but it was from a couple of months ago before [EA Sports designer] @donny_moore finalized the ratings. … Also worth noting is that the new stretched out ratings means a 79 this year is more like an 85 from last year’s game.
Which sounded better to me, so I asked Hall if he had heard about the upgrade. He shrugged. “It went up a little bit,” he said. “We’ve still got some stuff to work out, though.”
And so the saga continues.
I joked with Albright that he didn’t know how easy he had had it, and he laughed. “DeAngelo may not realize, but he’s going to be fielding questions about this forever.”
