Jason Campbell Talks Leadership, Adversity

Posted by Matt Terl on May 20, 2009 – 2:41 pm

Jason Campbell spoke yesterday at a luncheon for the Loudoun County and Dulles Regional Chambers of Commerce. You would be forgiven for assuming that this event had no relevance to his role as a football player, but I suspect you would be mistaken.

I say “suspect,” because nothing was mentioned that was specific to this offseason. There was no mention of, for example, eleven weeks of Jay Cutler rumors, no talk of the thirty days of Mark Sanchez, and certainly no reference to his contract situation.

But the topic of Campbell’s talk as set forth in the flyers for the event was “Leadership, Overcoming Adversity and Being Prepared to Play Quarterback in the NFL,” and it certainly seemed to me like he was alluding very directly to the events of the last three months, and to his expectations for the upcoming season.

Here are some excerpts; judge for yourselves. Read more »

Golf Leads To Entertaining Wardrobe Choices

Posted by Matt Terl on May 20, 2009 – 11:38 am

Let me start by promising that this site isn’t going to turn into The Official Golf Blog of the Washington Redskins. In fact, these pictures are from an event last week — the Redskins Annual Partner Invitational Golf Outing, or something like that — that I didn’t even attend. But a few of the pictures were interesting enough for me to ask about.

Stephon Heyer, for example, apparently showed up underdressed by the course’s standards, so they asked if he would consider changing into some more traditional, khakis-and-collars-level golf attire. Heyer happily agreed. But the pro shop didn’t quite stock clothes sized for a 6-6, 314 pound man, and he was forced to squeeze into slightly-too-small shorts and shirt.

I’m guessing the golf cart just shrank in the wash.

Heyer’s ensemble was the product of a mildly amusing sequence of events, and it does look uncomfortable, but it’s not nearly enough to challenge Clinton Portis‘s socks for the title of Most Fantastic Redskins Golf Wardrobe.

No, that honor goes to the pants that safeties coach Steve Jackson was wearing. Read more »

Wednesday, May 20: Brian Orakpo, The Ethan Albright Of NCAA 2009

Posted by Matt Terl on May 20, 2009 – 10:24 am

It’s not surprising that Redskins first-round draft choice Brian Orakpo is excited about being on the cover of the Playstation 2 version of EA Sports’ NCAA Football 10 — it’s a clear honor, doubly so since just about everyone in Redskins Park seems to play the college football video game. And he makes that clear in an interview over on ESPN.com’s Gamer Blog:

“I’m a beast on the game, and I’m not just saying that because I’m on the cover,” he says. “I feel blessed to be on the cover of a game I’ve been playing for years…I’m so good, I need to have your job.

“Call of Duty: World at War, Halo, Halo Wars, Madden, NCAA, NBA 2K9…I’m on everything. I’m a huge gamer. That’s why it’s so cool to be on the cover of the PlayStation 2 game. The PlayStation 2 is the foundation of gaming for a lot of people.”

What’s a little more surprising in the interview is learning what Orakpo has in common with new teammate Ethan Albright. Read more »
