Once their photos and physicals were done, Antwaan Randle El and Renaldo Wynn headed out of Redskins Park to a Boys & Girls Club in Southeast D.C., where they’re going to unveil a Redskins Youth Fitness Zone and lead a group of preteens and teenagers in exercises to combat youth obesity.
I talked to Randle El about it briefly before they departed.Tell me about this event you’re going to.
“The event’s run through the Boys & Girls Club. We’re there to talk to the kids and encourage them about eating right and being fit. A lot of schools across America now, they only have gym once, maybe twice a week. When I was coming up, it was every day. So some of that’s part of the problem.
“But we’re just coming out to encourage these kids and show them, I’m fit, and it’s not just because I’ve got the title of professional athlete. I work to stay fit, and they have to do the same thing.”
And you do work out — you’ve actually been working out on your own for most of the offseason, right?
In … New Jersey, right? What sort of workout do you do?
“Right. I do a lot of things — some jumps, some explosive stuff, weight training — but the biggest thing is the way you eat. If you’re not eating right … you can work out all day long, but if you’re not eating right, it’s gonna catch up to you.”
It’s catching up to me now — I wish I had listened to something like this when I was younger. Do you have a favorite part of doing events like this?
“Oh, just being with the kids and actually being able to talk to them, from me right to them. To really get them to understand the importance of it all … that’s the best part of the event.”
Do the kids respond well to it?
“You always get good feedback. They wanna know what I’m eating, what I do to stay fit, all of that. You can kind of give them that and encourage them, but a lot of it also falls on the parents. If the parents are feeding them the wrong thing all the time, that’s all the kid knows. So we go the other way, try to get the kid to encourage the parents.”
