Pick #80: Redskins Select Kevin Barnes, CB From Maryland (Updated)
Usually, when you say the guy your team picked in the draft induces vomiting, it's a bit of fan hyperbole meaning, "Hey, I don't like this guy." For example, the several dozen people who yesterday told me things like, "If the Redskins take Mark Sanchez, I might vomit." It's usually just a figure of speech.
Not this time.
With their third round pick, the Redskins selected Maryland cornerback Kevin Barnes, who is best known for a hit that caused Cal's Jahvid Best to actually lose his lunch.

"That's probably the hardest hit I've ever taken in my life," Best said at the time. "It really knocked the wind out of me, and I had a little trouble breathing for the rest of the game."Barnes reportedly scored a remarkable 41 on his Wonderlic test at the NFL Scouting Combine, where he also ran the 40 in 4.52 seconds. Check out his Combine video after the jump.

Horrible pick. Offensive lineman like Jamon Meredith and Duke Robinson sitting there; Sidbury from Richmond available, and they go DB? Horrible, horrible, horrible.

did not really need a cb but he was probably the best player on their board, and he does look like he would be good. Saw some more you tube videos of him in coverage, he reminds me like a cross between sean taylor and shawn springs

I agree with you ehren..what were they thinking in all honesty!!!! what about the wear and tear on clinton portis, and ladell betts productivity when it counts. michigan state's javon ringer was still on the board. you mean to tell me they wouldn't get something out of ringer...sometimes i think vinny and dan will need to live in mars before the redskins can achieve anything

I'm not against this at all. This guy is violent and will probably mix in at nickel and play mostly in Dime. The dude is a big time hitter. I like that we've solidified our secondary and our DL.
Now I'd like to get a OLB and a RG since I think the tackles have been picked clean.

I'm with everyone else on this pick although he'll probably turn out to be a productive player. O-line is more of a need with linebacker a close second. I guess they had their eye on Barnes for awhile now and didn't think he would last that long. I'm pretty damn impressed with that 41 wonderlic score though.

I like this pick it makes sence. We let Springs go, Smoot is another year older and this guy is better than the rest we have on the roster. This pick is a responce to the Giants and Eagles wide receiver picks in this draft.
I think he upgrades us a Nickel and certainly improves our depth in this position

We need a OLB and an OL. Also, would not mind another RB and WR...DB? I like the fact that this guy can kill people (On the field).

also i could be wrong but wasn't there trade talks surrounding carlos rogers before they let springs go? maybe for a guard/tackle or linebacker, I can see barnes starting and being really good (gut feeling) and if not at least excellent depth.

DB's get hurt. Smoot is sometimes inconsistent. Good pick. Get an excellent corner. rather than a guard, tackle, or LB who is just OK. Carlos Rogers is also an unrestricted free agent next year. C'mon guys

we have corners on the bench, Don't they want Campbell to be able to look down field? Is it against the Redskin law book to improve the offensive line???????? He is a good player and worth that spot, but he will not block for our offence.

I dont think Cerrato plans to pick OLB or OL unless the right player was available.
This is because he has already gained players in these positions through free agency, whether these players are good enough or will actually improve depth is open to debate.

This is a wisdom pick in that we have solidified our secondary. This guy can play man -to-man and zone coverage, has good height and good leaping ability, He might look skinny, but boy he will take the fight to you when the ball is the air. And fact that he has the speed to go with the position speaks volume. He can challenge tall receivers
This guy is a diamond in the rough.

You guys need to understand the inner workings of our d. We let springs go. He played the inside/slot wr in the nickel package. We don't have a guy to do that right now. Smoot is going to do it but he's not that great at it. So we go out and draft a big hard hitting close to the line corner that has good short coverage ability. He won't be a great corner because to me he looks unquick (not slow) and tight but playing up in the line on the slot guy is what his role will be. So to me this pick was worth it in the third because that position is key on defense to preventing third down conversions. Barnes may not be a star but trust me if he's playing that slot guy on the nickel packages he'll have much more of an impact than even orakpo on most third downs

I think the CB pick is a good one. If Barnes didn't get injured in his senior year he would have be an early second rounder. He has been a thumper for UMD for a while. I would really like us to get marcus freeman LB or Herman Johnson OL or Javon Ringer RB, clintons getting older and Betts isn't his replacement, maybe trade betts to someone for a early fifth to get ringer. Anyway, as I write this it is round 4 pick 13 and I still see a couple 2nd and a bunch of 3rd round talent still available, maybe guys just keep falling to us all day!

This Guy Is A Maniact...I Like The Pick...But A OL Should Be Next Then A OLB Pick One Up Later Toward The Season Not In The Draft.

Yeah we needed depth with our CB's, although with Ringer still sitting there I think a spark plug like him would've been nice. Curious to see if there are implications with this pick and Rogers trade possibilities...

Barnes was a smart pick.. 41 on the wonderlic? thats double what our starting QB earned.. Our offensive line was just beat up last year. #17's throwing mechanics are too slow for this league. His throwing progression starts from his hip for heaven's sake.

If you look at the rest of the teams and the projected players there were no OL left that deserved a 3rd. After 20 of them wnet in the first 80, the next ones were projected at late 4th, 5th so we did good by not reaching for a player not worth a 3rd. Wish we could have traded and got more picks. Hopefully we will get an OL, LB in the 5th, 6th, or 7th

Thats sad when our starting QB had a wonderlic score that low! The QB should be the smartest or one of the smartest guys on the team! That explains why Campbell cant read defenses fast enough. Can Kevin Barnes play QB!
