Vinny Cerrato Is Happy

Posted by Matt Terl on April 25, 2009 – 7:15 pm

Executive vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato talked with the media moments ago and — for the first time in weeks — appeared genuinely relaxed and happy. He explained how he had fruitlessly tried to trade up to get Brian Orakpo — who he says was ranked in the top 5 on the Redskins board — only to have the player fall to him at thirteen.

Here’s the video; transcription is after the jump for those of you who prefer reading things to watching things. (Also, don’t miss Coach Zorn’s comments in the previous post.)

Coach Zorn Talks Brian Orakpo

Posted by Matt Terl on April 25, 2009 – 6:52 pm

Immediately following the selection of Brian Orakpo, head coach Jim Zorn took the podium to tell the media what it was like in the draft room (nerve-wracking), if the Redskins tried to trade up (“there were talks”), on watching Orakpo fall (“there were some tense moments”), and if the team thought about drafting Michael Oher (“we had Orakpo ranked higher”).

Here are some of the highlights of his talk.

On drafting Brian Orakpo at 13:
“We’re very excited. Sitting there with sweaty palms, talking about it, what was going to happen. We feel very fortunate to get Orakpo at 13 and we feel like he is going to be an outstanding Washington Redskin from that defensive end position.”

On how surprised the Redskins were that Brian Orakpo fell to 13:
“Yeah, I think we were surprised. There were a couple teams there they helped us, basically, in my mind, because they took players with their needs that didn’t match ours. And that was a real plus for us because we feel like he is an outstanding player.”

On if Brian Orakpo will play defensive end:
“Right now we have him slated as a defensive end. He will eventually, if we fire zone or something like that, he will be in the secondary at some point but right now he is coming in what we think is a pretty good pass rusher.”

On if the Redskins thought they would get Orakpo when Cleveland traded out of the fifth spot:
“No, we thought that there were a couple other teams that needed a defensive position. So it wasn’t just that Cleveland trade.” Read more »

And The Pick Is … Brian Orakpo, DE from Texas

Posted by Matt Terl on April 25, 2009 – 5:32 pm

More than three months ago, I posted the above video when Mel Kiper released his first mock draft projecting Brian Orakpo to the Redskins. Kiper nailed it. The folks at FedExField must be ecstatic — that homemade jersey just became much more useful. Read more »

And So We Lay The Sanchez Rumors To Rest. Finally.

Posted by Matt Terl on April 25, 2009 – 4:42 pm

The New York Jets trade up to the fifth overall pick and select Mark Sanchez. It remains to be seen what the Redskins do, but that’s gotta be a lot of happy people at FedExField right now, if my informal poll was any indicator.

The NFL has to be miserable that Sanchez didn’t make the trip to New York. Read more »

Pictures From The Draft Day Party (Yes, Including The 2009 Cheerleaders)

Posted by Matt Terl on April 25, 2009 – 4:02 pm

I’m back at Redskins Park and will be updating from here as the actual Draft continues, but here are some more pictures from the Draft Day Party at FedExField. Presumably the party is still going there as everyone awaits the Redskins pick, and Kevin from Hogs Haven is doing a good job of following along.

While we wait, here are the 2009 Washington Redskins Cheerleaders waiting to perform in public for the very first time.

More pictures after the jump. Read more »

The Consensus In The Parking Lot at FedExField Is Clear

Posted by Matt Terl on April 25, 2009 – 1:21 pm

Walking around the parking lot of FedExField for the Draft Day Party, three things very quickly become clear:

1) It is hot out. Like, seriously hot. Like Training-Camp-in-August hot. So, like I said earlier, if you’re coming, dress appropriately, wear sunscreen, drink water. Really.

2) People are very enthusiastic. Cars started arriving for the ExtremeSkins tailgate at 5:30 this morning. The draft, you’ll remember, isn’t until 4:00 this afternoon. So these folks — who had been grilling and frying and drinking and just generally celebrating for just over SIX HOURS before the gates even officially opened — are really making the most of that one first-day pick today.

3) With that pick, they would very much like the team to select a defensive player. Preferably Brian Orakpo, out of Texas, as Huly and Blondie from ExtremeSkins are demonstrating in the picture at the top of this post, but someone on the defense. An offensive lineman, if available, runs a close second, but Orakpo is the name that most people are mentioning (and ocasionally mispronouncing).

When I ask what people want the Redskins to do in today’s draft, the resulting tumult of overtalking makes it impossible to get everyone’s names correct, but here’s a sampling of the responses as best I can decipher them from my recording:

Saturday, April 25: Draft Day Party at FedExField

Posted by Matt Terl on April 25, 2009 – 9:03 am

Don’t forget: the Redskins Draft Day Party takes place today at FedExField.

It’s a chance for you to meet Redskins players, hear Head Coach Jim Zorn speak, enjoy fan activities and skill competitions, tour the locker room, and — of course — watch the NFL Draft on the Jumbotrons and stadium TVs with fellow Redskins fans. (Also, for those of you who were intrigued when I wrote about the 2009 Cheerleader auditions, this event marks the squad’s official debut.)

Admission and parking are both completely free. To attend, just complete your Draft Day Party invitation at, print it out and bring it with you. That’s all you need to do.

The gates open at noon and Coach Zorn is expected to speak around 2:00. The weather at FedExField today is expected to be pretty hot, so dress appropriately and drink plenty of water.

In past years, this has been one of those events that everyone — from Jim Zorn to Chris Cooley to skeptical fans at Extremeskins — has enjoyed, and today is shaping up to be a great day for it.
