Two months ago almost exactly, in a post I entitled “Because What The Team Really Needs Is A Quarterback Controversy,” I poked fun at Michael Lombardi of the National Football Post for writing the following:
Byron Leftwich, Pittsburgh, 28; 6-5, 245; 5.03; 2003; 1st round (7th overall); Thomas Condon – He wants to go to Washington and compete for a starting position with his hometown Redskins. Not sure that will happen since the ‘Skins have indicated they will not be active in the free-agent market.
Oh, how I laughed. At the time, I said:
Anyhow, this seems like a singularly bad idea. The best things Jason Campbell has going for him right now are that he’s entering his second year in this offensive system, and that he’s doing it as the unquestioned starter. A signing like this would put a real crimp in the second half of that. And I don’t even want to imagine how angry this would make the Colt Brennan contingent.
Little did I know that A) Lombardi was right, and Leftwich would indeed come in for a workout, and that B) that workout would actually take place AFTER the main offseason quarterback drama had taken place, and on the same day as a reportedly-productive clear-the-air meeting to actually HEAD OFF a quarterback controversy.
Anyhow, here are the details of Leftwich’s workout at Redskins Park as best as I can tell: Read more »
