Friday, April 3: Last Thoughts On The Cutler Thing

Just a few last notes on the finally-ended Jay Cutler saga.

  • It was fascinating to see what things were like at the Park yesterday — mainly because for the most part, it was just like being with any other group of Redskins fans. Whatever talks may have been happening would’ve been happening at the highest levels and behind closed doors. There were plenty of rumors flying around, from sources that you might think would be considered reliable, but in the end none of them proved any more correct than the wild hypotheses that were popping up online.
  • That experience, though, really helped me understand how generally-reliable reporters can get ahead of themselves. If there’s someone who epitomizes reliability and throughness, it’s John Keim, and even he fell victim to this yesterday, running with the headline “Source: Cutler Trade Imminent” at 3:00 p.m. in a story about Cutler coming to Washington. This realization won’t make me stop making fun of Chris Mortensen’s abysmal track record, but I certainly understand it a little better.
