Monday, March 16: Feel The Excitement Of Offseason Conditioning

Posted by Matt Terl on March 16, 2009 – 10:38 am

The offseason conditioning program starts today. What this means, basically, is that the players come in and do non-football workouts — running, weight-training, stuff like that — as a group, instead of on their own. No practices, no drills, just the soft-launch of the season.

But players are back in the building, which starts to build excitement for the season, so the media is back as well, at least for today.

And how could they not be, when there are opportunities for exciting player Q&A sessions! For example, Casey Rabach. He’s generally known as a good talker, an entertaining interview, and a quick-witted soundbite, so he was pulled into the media room for this scintillating and informative exchange:

On the offseason moves:

Rabach: “I think we put ourselves in a good position to start the season. Barring injury and, y’know… there’s a lot that can happen during the season, but I like the position that we’re in right now. On paper we look real good, but we’ll know when the season starts.”

On what this week is:

Rabach: “This week? Just getting reacquainted. Just getting back into the swing of things here. Y’know, obviously working out at home is different from working out here, and going back into the regimen of being on a schedule and all that stuff and doing it their way, it takes a little while, but everything’s good.”

On doing the early, 8:00 – 10:00 workout shift:

Rabach: “It’s gotta be early for me. I can’t wait around. I’m up anyways.”

That was followed by a long pause, then the traditional “Thanks, Casey,” and Rabach was out the door. Rabach speaks very quickly; the entire three questions probably took a minute.

So this is what it is, for now: guys working out, guys getting to know each other a little bit, and not much more than that. Domonique Dorsey is in the building, as are a lot of the other futures guys. Albert Haynesworth is in the building, along with Derrick Dockery. Much of the offensive line has already been in and cleared out for the day. Fred Smoot is in the building. None of it means that anything interesting is going to happen.
