An Easy Way To Predict Free Agent Destinations

Posted by Matt Terl on February 17, 2009 – 3:01 pm

Let’s pretend, just for a minute, that your job is to predict the NFL future. Who’s going to win games, who’s going to get drafted where, what players are going to sign with which teams … all that good off-season stuff. It doesn’t really matter how often you’re right or spectacularly wrong, so long as your predictions have the indefinable air of believability.

Now, let’s say that it’s the time of year when big-name free agents are getting set to move around, and your employer — the TV station, or website, or magazine — has said to you, hey, use your keen insider knowledge and tell us where Guy X is going to wind up. How do you do it?

In some situations, you’ll have genuine information, of course. Whispers from agents, rumors, off-the-record comments … all of those things that you can stir together into informed speculation to reasonably predict what’s going to happen.

OR you can just point to the Redskins, maybe mention some lousy decisions from almost ten years ago, and head out to the mall to get your shopping done.

Tuesday, February 17: Fred Smoot and Khary Campbell Dance

Posted by Matt Terl on February 17, 2009 – 11:13 am

When you mention “Washington Redskins” and “Dancing With The Stars” in the same sentence, one name leaps quickly and obviously to mind: Joe Gibbs.

Or maybe that’s not the first name. But on Valentine’s Day this past Saturday, the former Redskins coach’s Youth For Tomorrow program did hold its seventh annual “Dancing With The Stars” Sweetheart Ball. The event featured all of the charity-related things you’d expect — a live auction, a benefit raffle, and the eponymous dancing (with stars!) — but also a few twists that you might not.

The tickets for the benefit raffle, for example, were being sold table-to-table by Lt. Col. Oliver North. And the auction featured the only Sweetheart Ball appearance by that other Redskin who has a little history of Dancing With The Stars, in the form of an autographed photo of himself and his TV dance partner Edyta Sliwinska.

Which is not to say that there were no Redskins among the dancing stars (alongside Miss Teen DC 2008 Jasmine Alexis and Jorge Andres, Redskins color analyst for ESPN Deportes 730). For example, Fred Smoot — after attempting to back out via claims of pulled hamstrings for both himself and his dancing partner — tripped the light fantastic to Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On,” which I was able to capture in grainy video for posterity.

Contrary to my expectations, though, Smoot wasn’t the most entertaining dancing Redskin for the evening. Read more »
