Ryan Plackemeier Waived; Guy From Lindenwood Now the Only Redskins Punter
The punting drama just never stops at Redskins Park. Ryan Plackemeier was waived today, leaving recent futures contract signee Zac Atterberry as the Redskins only punter. When Plackemeier arrived in relief of rookie Durant Brooks, he was notable mainly for his size; in fact, he described himself as "not too interesting." He had a rough start punting for the Redskins, but seemed to have settled into something of a groove by the end of the season, including NFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors for Week 15.
Atterberry, on the other hand, is an undrafted free agent from NAIA school Lindenwood (it's in Missouri) who spent last season's training camp with the Chicago Bears. His listed weight is 186, which finishes off that particular avenue of amusement (and also means that the team has shed 61 pounds at the position, equivalent to an average nine year old boy).
I don't know much else about Atterberry, but a YouTube video of his second NFL punt is after the jump, and it certainly seems promising enough. (Although it does make me wonder about his first NFL punt, and any subsequent NFL punts. Still, at least it's something to generate some optimism.)

I don't think Plackemeier was THAT great, but I definitely don't know why we cut him without a real plan B. I'd be surprised if Atterberry is more than camp fodder. I thought Plackemeier was improving at the end of the season so I'm not sure I understand cutting him and keeping a guy with 2 NFL punts , instead of just keeping Plackemeier and signing someone else (not the guy with 2 punts) who can actually compete.

Plack was really coming together at the end of the season. I thought he would continue to improve. Odd that we cut him instead of letting him fight out a camp battle. Vinny's genius at work I am sure.

I would love to hear Vinny's rationale on why this move helps the team. I guess it's going to be a revolving door for punter re-treads. I say they need to bring Durant Brooks back and let him try and redeem himself. I know, I know...he was absolutely miserable in the short time he was around but he's too talented to give up on. Besides, can he really be any worse than this Atterberry kid?
I miss Matt Turk...

That does sound like an us move. But if it fixes our punter situation for the next 5 years, then so be it. Give Lechler 2 mill a year and be done with it.
Wow, I just spent a lot on a punter.
