A Call to Action From Chris Cooley's Mom

Posted by Matt Terl on February 2, 2009 – 2:22 pm

Back in the long-ago time of November 2008 — in those forgotten days when the very idea of the Arizona Cardinals in the Super Bowl was only the stuff of surrealist comedy — I wrote about Chris Cooley organizing and helping with a remarkable event for women battling breast cancer.

At the time I noted that a Redskins staffer said that “he had never seen a player as involved with an event, from conception to execution, as Cooley was with this one,” but when I talked to Cooley that day, he very specifically did not mention his mom’s ongoing battle (although he did address the subject in his own after-action write-up).

Today, though, Nancy Cooley herself posts some of her story on Cooley’s blog, and asks people to help in the fight against cancer by supporting her in the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life event. She talks candidly about her reaction hearing her diagnosis on the week of Chris and Christy’s wedding, and breaks down exactly what it all meant to her wedding week plans.

This year, hundreds of thousands of people will hear the words “You have cancer”. On May 16, 2008, I was one of them. I was driving to work on Friday and I received a call from my doctor telling me that I had breast cancer. It was one week before Chris and Christy’s wedding. Instead of being able to focus on seeing everyone and celebrating Chris and Christy’s wedding, the only thoughts in my head were “I have cancer”.

It’s an important call to action, a moving read, and also something that offers some background to better understand one of the things that motivated Cooley at that event back in the long-gone days of ought-eight. Read more »

Monday, February 2: Punching Koalas = Good Advertising

Posted by Matt Terl on February 2, 2009 – 10:18 am

Sure, Super Bowl XLIII turned out to be arguably the Greatest Super Bowl Ever (at least since last year’s Greatest Super Bowl Ever; maybe we should start waiting a couple of days before we try to put these things into context). Well-played game, plenty of scoring, an exciting final drive … which was a good thing, because the commercials turned out to be something of a letdown.

The First Cuts blog counts down their five favorite spots, and it’s a fairly uninspiring bunch. I agree with their top choice — any commercial that features someone shrieking, someone riding a dolphin (or maybe a seal), and a koala with a teacup getting punched in the face … well, that’s a top-notch ad in my book.

And, despite — or maybe because of — my earlier complaints about the legendary Mean Joe Greene ad, I really enjoyed the reimagining of it with Troy Polamalu. Read more »
