Yes, Dockery Is Back

Posted by Matt Terl on February 27, 2009 – 10:39 pm

And this relaxing, low-key first full day of free agency ends with the Redskins agreeing to terms with free agent G Derrick Dockery. Dockery was not only a fan favorite during his first stint here, but a favorite of just about everyone he worked with, and they’re all excited to have him return.

The last twenty-four hours have brought Albert Haynesworth, DeAngelo Hall, and Derrick Dockery. Hopefully those three send just about any Redskins fan happily into the weekend. Read more »

Haynesworth's Press Conference Transcribed

Posted by Matt Terl on February 27, 2009 – 8:19 pm

Albert Haynesworth impressed in his press conference today, coming across as confident, humble, and charming — a tough trifecta to pull off.

His comments follow, and a downloadable PDF of the press packet is attached at the end.

Opening remarks

“Man, I’ll tell you. I never really thought I’d be here as far as a Redskin. And, you know, actually being a Redskin and … a player [for] a team that my uncle likes. My uncle is a big Redskins fan, and growing up you hear the tradition of it, and to be standing here in this organization with this history and looking to go forward … I mean, it’s amazing. “I’m just excited, and I’m ready to go. I’m ready to play. And what you can expect out of me is what you saw, what I did at Tennessee in those last two years. I mean, like I said, I’ve started a new chapter in my life after my incident, and this is a big chapter and I’m looking forward to keep adding to it.”

On what he’s learned from the mistakes he’s made and how he’s grown:

“Well, you know, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. That’s what my mom said. So, it didn’t kill me. It almost did, but it didn’t kill me, and I feel like I’m stronger from it.

“Y’know, what happened was really a bad day, and it really tested, I guess, my faith as a person in myself, if that makes any sense. Like, I had to really look into myself and to see if I wanted my career to go down the drain, if I wanted all of y’all to remember Albert Haynesworth as a player that kicked somebody in the head, or if I wanted to be remembered as a player that turned around and took his punishment, did what he did, and stepped up and became a great player.

“You know, it’s only two short years past, but I expect to keep taking those steps and kind of covering it up or kicking dirt over it.”

Prepping For The Press Conference

Posted by Matt Terl on February 27, 2009 – 4:24 pm

In a little less than an hour, the Albert Haynesworth press conference kicks off in the auditorium here at Redskins Park. Sometime not long after that, possibly on this very site, there will be a picture of Haynesworth. He will be standing at a podium holding a #92 Redskins jersey with his name on the back, smiling and looking out at the assembled DC media.

Which is why, earlier today, equipment manager Brad Berlin was downstairs in the equipment room, assembling letters on the table…

…slow-pressing them onto the jersey…

…and then quick-blasting them permanently into place.

NFL Network and NFL.com Weigh In On The Signings

Posted by Matt Terl on February 27, 2009 – 3:14 pm

Every year I’m amazed by the round-the-clock coverage of the first night of NFL free agency — an awful lot of scrutiny is placed on, essentially, a bunch of job interviews. It felt like this year took it to new heights, especially when ProFootballTalk nearly killed the entire internet at the stroke of midnight.

I think this feeling came about partially because there are just more outlets covering the NFL than ever before, and partially because not that much really happened outside of the Haynesworth and Hall deals — so you had more people talking about fewer things, and thus covering them with even more thoroughness than usual.

As an example, the NFL Network. Above, NFL Network discusses the signing. Then there’s this article by Thomas George on NFL.com, which is possibly more supportive of the signing than even the most rabid Redskins fan:

Some Redskins Comment on The Acquisitions; Then There's Rocky McIntosh

Posted by Matt Terl on February 27, 2009 – 12:23 pm

Even though the activity level in the building is much higher than it has been, and even though the media presence has increased enormously (from “zero” to “a whole lot”), there still aren’t that many players here. Still, it seemed worthwhile to see if any of them had anything interesting to say about last night’s two big signings.

Mostly, no.

Kedric Golston was excited about Albert Haynesworth, his new defensive linemate:

(That’s Intern Bridgette asking the question, by the way — I haven’t undergone a startling and unexpected voice change.)

Chris Samuels was also enthusiastic about Haynesworth, but you couldn’t hear him on the video with Golston shouting in the background. Read more »

Vinny Cerrato Talks Signings on ESPN 980

Posted by Matt Terl on February 27, 2009 – 10:00 am

Executive Vice President of Football Operations Vinny Cerrato went on ESPN 980 this morning to discuss last night’s signings with Andy Pollin and Kevin Sheehan.

When I left Redskins Park around 4:30 in the morning, it seemed like things were going to take more time to develop, so it’s particularly interesting for me to see Cerrato break down the timeline from last night, and explain at least a little of the bidding process.

On how last night went:

“It was a long night, it was up and down, you know. At times you felt good, at times you felt terrible. But at about 5:30 this morning, we got the deal done with Albert, and probably about midnight we got the deal done with DeAngelo.”

On how the DeAngelo Hall negotiations proceeded:

“It heated up about 11:30. I can’t remember if it was right before midnight or right after. I mean, it was right around there that they accepted the deal.”

On what Albert Haynesworth brings to the Redskins defense:

“I think we played outstanding defense, because we finished fourth, sixth against the points, but I think getting sacks and creating turnovers helps score points. I think it was something that we wanted to improve this offseason, and I think with the addition of Albert, I think what he does is he just distracts inside. I mean, he takes two or three blockers most of the time.

“He had eight and half sacks, but I think what he does is he helps everybody else get sacks, get turnovers. I mean, talking to all our players prior to this about, ‘What do you think about getting Albert Haynesworth,’ they were all ecstatic. I talked to London Fletcher, and Griff, and Fred Smoot. DeAngelo, right after we signed him I kinda told him what our plans were, and he says, ‘Go get the big guy, that’s what we need.’ Because if you get a push in the pocket up the middle, the quarterback cannot step up, and then it gives the outside guys a better opportunity to get to the quarterback.”

Albert Haynesworth Agrees To Terms

Posted by Matt Terl on February 27, 2009 – 6:50 am

The Redskins have agreed to terms with free agent DT Albert Haynesworth. A press conference is scheduled for five p.m. at Redskins Park.

I’ll have more specifics later in the day, and I’m pretty interested to hear how this went down — when I left Redskins Park late last night (or, I suppose, early this morning), I was under the impression that if anything like this was going to happen, it wouldn’t be quite this quick. More as I hear it. Read more »

Friday, February 27: Redskins Agree To Terms With DeAngelo Hall

Posted by Matt Terl on February 27, 2009 – 12:26 am

DeAngelo Hall got his long term deal, agreeing to terms just at the start of free agency. So that’s that handled. Still waiting to see what else — if anything — is yet to come. At least now you know you didn’t stay awake on Free Agency Night for no reason. Read more »

Some Ways To Kill Time Until 12:01

Posted by Matt Terl on February 26, 2009 – 6:10 pm

If you’re trying to keep yourself occupied until the official start of free agency at 12:01 tonight, here are a few things to help you out.

(I don’t know what — if anything — is going to happen Redskins-wise at 12:01, but I can tell from my inbox that plenty of people are going to hang around hitting refresh on their computers until then. So this is just some other stuff to look at while the clock ticks.)

  • The guys from TheHogs.net talked to Prime Sports Network’s Pro Football Central Radio to help preview the NFC East in free agency and the draft. Colt Brennan is mentioned, if that sort of thing appeals to you. (Scroll down a bit to the archive of today’s show.)
  • The good folks at ExtremeSkins are doing their best to figure out what the availability of former Bill (and former Redskin) Derrick Dockery means to the team’s free agent plans. It doesn’t have any direct significance to free agency, but I will tell you that everyone here — literally EVERY person — I’ve spoken to about Dockery has had nothing but good things to say about the guy. It’s a little eerie, to be honest.

Two More Tendered

Posted by Matt Terl on February 26, 2009 – 12:35 pm

Like kicker Shaun Suisham last night, defensive tackles Kedric Golston and Anthony Montgomery received tender offers from the team, meaning that the Redskins can match any offers they receive. So if the non-stop barrage of Albert Haynesworth rumors prove false, the middle of last year’s line remains intact. And if the rumors are correct … well, that’s either some solid depth at tackle or another competitive position battle in training camp. Read more »
